- Shut down valves I've worked with haven't had an 'Air Flow' for their operation. For the smaller valves, they consist of diaphragm operated valves either held open or closed by pneumatic pressure. The air supply at 25psi to give a diaphragm holding pressure of 15 psi, is via a solenoid valve which dumps the air pressure to either open or close the valve depending upon its function. (That of isolating a system or relieving pressure). The solenoid is actuated by a signal from the shut-down system, and the valve is a 3-way unit which isolates the supply air and vents the pressure off the diaphragm. Other SDV's in my experience, are operated in a similar way but are much larger and are operated by a pneumatic air cylinder and piston with air supplied at 100 psi. Others encountered are ... MOV's...Motor Operated Valves that can be automatically operated from the shutdown system, or Operated Remotely from a safe distance (ROV's).

- Q: HowdyWas taking apart a screw down NR valve and screw lift valve and noticed the spindles were made out of different materials. Brass and Steel.I am aware that brass is non corrosive but why use steel in the other valve? Is it due to their operation, do they come or not come in contact with fluids? - *In steam service , steam flashing is one of the factor which erode the spindle ( say valve stem) *The stem serves as a connector from the actuator to the inside of the valve and transmits this actuation force. Stems are either smooth for actuator controlled valves or threaded for manual valves. The smooth stems are surrounded by packing material to prevent leaking material from the valve. This packing is a wearable material and will have to be replaced during maintenance. With a smooth stem the ends are threaded to allow connection to the plug and the actuator. The stem must not only withstand a large amount of compression force during valve closure, but also have high tensile strength during valve opening. In addition, the stem must be very straight, or have low run out, in order to ensure good valve closure. This minimum run out also minimizes wear of the packing contained in the bonnet, which provides the seal against leakage. The stem may be provided with a shroud over the packing nut to prevent foreign bodies entering the packing material, which would accelerate wear. Put a Big crescent wrench on the valve. Then take larger Chanel locks and grab the crescent wrench and turn a full 180 degrees. Check your sinks for the results.

- its a pressure release valve it release the air when you let off the gas there two type the VTA which releases the back in the atmosphere you know this when you hear turbocharged cars let off this gas and you hear the hissing sound. and the other is a recirculating valve which sends the air directly into the air intake there a hissing sound but its not as loud
