- Tedr is right.. W/O seeing it its hard to tell.. Get down on your hands and knees and rap on it w/ your knuckles.. If it sounds hollow and then solid on another part that isn t making sounds then more than likely it s loose tile and just the gout and pressure is holding it together..Seen it many times.. Trdr has many of causes right too.. But its hard to say just what it is GL
- Q: I am in the process of tiling my bathroom, now that I have the 12 X 12 tiles on the floor and nearly done with them, I need to do the walls behind the toilet sink and cabinet. My question is, how far do I have to move the toilet flange (pipe) forward so the new tiles will not interfere. The toilet sits right on the wall. I used 1/2 backerboard, and I am using a 4x4 tile and thinset to mix and hold it together.
- If you removed the drywall and installed the cement board then add the thickness of the tile plus 1/4 inch for the thin set. If you put the cement board over the drywall then and in the 1/2 inch into your total. It's not a bad idea to give it a little extra room behind the toilet. You don't really want the tank right up against the tiles anyway. All it takes is somebody to lean back on that tank and crack a tile .Give it an extra 1/4 inch. Bottom line the toilet flange should be 12 inches from the finished wall by code. Don't forget to use a thicker wax ring or a flange extension when you reset that toilet to make up the difference of the cement board and tile.
- Q: Does anyone know how to refinish or paint ceramic tile? Or a website showing me how? Please help! =)
- Toffy's okorder /... Basically, you'll need to get the tile very clean, paint in several coats and then seal it with a good urethane. You need to be cautious about floors that will consistently get wet which would cause you problems with the paint and urethane. Also, if you paint and seal your floor I would treat it more like a wood floor as far as cleaning is concerned since you're now just going to be cleaning a urethane surface. Lastly, can I offer some free advice? Once you start painting that floor there is no turning back. It would be almost impossible to remove the paint if you don't like the way it looks and you would probably just have to rip the flooor out or put another flooring over the top of it as Toffy mentioned. If I was thinking about doing this, I would get some similar tiles to what you have and just lay them on a piece of plywood in the garage and do a quick grout job. It doesn't have to be perfect. I would do some testing with paint and urethane to see how it looks and how well it will hold up to wear.
- Q: I have just had a room tiled with porcelain tiles. They are non-shiny matte tiles and it was suggested to me that i should use a sealer. What sealer would be better to use, a water based or solvent based? What are the differences between using the two?
- Penetrating sealer.. Although a water based product, a couple of coats will last years. Mist on( w/ a spray bottle) wipe it thoroughly over the tile and grout with a damp cloth. I dampen a cloth with the sealer. Let set for 10/15 minutes and wipe excess off amd dry. Don t let it puddle and dry. Repeat at least once , twice if possible. The grout must be set for a minimum of 3 days with all the excess grout has all cleaned off. I ve have only used 2 brands over the years Cerama Seal and Miricle 511. - Q: I am completely re-doing one of the bathrooms in my home and I would like to put in a stand alone tile shower. Can someone tell me what the best material to use for it would be? Ceramic, porcelin, slate, travertine, marble?? Are any better for walls/floors/wet areas than others?
- The tile isn't as important as what the tiles are mounted to. Make sure you use material specific for wet areas. as for which one to use, it would depend on which one you like, and can afford. I like the looks of bigger tiles, but would much rather install smaller tiles. Bigger tiles can be a pain when it comes to making difficult cuts.
