Q: Out of the blue, my main bathroom that guests primarily use starting having an earthy smell coming from the sink drain. Its on the main floor, and there are no floors above it (in other words, not another sink above it). I examined the plumbing under the sink, and everything seems to be in working order, no leaks, trap is in good shape, etc. What should I do here?
Pour some bleach and hot water down the drain.
Q: Is there any easy trick to prevent a cat from peeing in a bathroom sink? I have 2 cats and I don't know which one does it and I don't want to have to punish both. Thanks.
Well you could always shut your bathroom door when you exit and not allow the cats into your bathroom. That would be the quickest way. you could also clean that sink very well with bleach or an Ammonia. This will get rid of their scent and might stop them from peeing in the sink. you could also watch to see what one goes in there and catch him / her climbing up on the sink and give him / her a good spanking. Cats are Extremely smart and believe me 1 or 2 good spankings will do the trick. Cats can remember over 200 different Life saving things. Cats only Remember what is most important to them and really nothing else. This is a proving fact, so by catching him /her in the act and you spanking its Azz, it will know its not allowed. * NOTE FOR THOSE WHO GAVE ME THUMBS DOWN * I know you gave me thumbs down because I said spank the cat but here is the issue. If you walked into your bathroom and your son or daughter was pissing in your sink you mean to tell me you wouldnt spank their asses. Theirs always a few in the bunch who I truly feel need their heads examined. The day I allow anyone or any animal to piss in my sink would probably be the day I did lose my mind. Not only is it absolutely gross and disgusting, its completely uncalled for and there is no need for it and anyone who feels that its not that big of an a deal well, your a slob and I would hate to set foot into your dump of a germ infested house. Hope these helped you out :)
Q: I just found the cabinet underneath my bathroom sink to be completely soaked and this is the second time its happened, first time was a couple months ago. After first time, I shut off both valves and checked all the fittings and nothing seemed to be leaking. I turned the water back on and everything was fine. However, today I came to find the same thing happen. I've shut the water off again at this point, but I'm guessing none of the fittings have a normal. Could there be some sort of back up in the pipes?? I'm in Ohio so it is fairly cold right now and was also a couple months ago. Possible that something is freezing slightly and backing up the system? I also have young children who could have clogged it with something. Please help
Hi, Jeholman. I have to suspect the big pipes under the sink, the drain lines. But let's look at the whole thing. Take out any and all stuff in the cabinet, get a flashlight, turn on the faucet full-blast, and have a look for leaks. Feel free to poke and prod things while this is happening, as it may disclose a weak or loose fitting. Go for any found. Also look for leaks where there shouldn't be any with good parts - like just behind the handle on the shut-off valves (non-repairable, just replace). Finally, with kids, it may be possible that enough water has been splashed up top, around the faucet base or the edge of the sink, to have leaked down into the cabinet, even with connections underneath OK. Just be thorough, and you'll find it.
Q: In my bathroom, I have a ball-joint sink valve. Which means it's a single rotating handle. Pushing it up turns it on. To the left, hot water. To the right, cold water. My dilemma is, if I push it all the way to the left, no water comes out. If I rest it in a certain position to the left, it sputters, and eventually cuts off altogether. In other words, it's a pain in the butt to get hot water out. I'm assuming it needs to be repaired, but could it also be that it is an energy saving faucet? As I'm not sure.Anyways, if you are knowledgeable in the area of plumbing, I would greatly appreciate your diagnostic if you have one. Even if it isn't right at all, I'd still be grateful for input.
This problem may be caused by low water pressure. Have you checked that your 'pressure adjusting valve' is set correctly? You'll want to locate your pressure adjusting valve that's connected to your water supply line. It can be in your basement, crawlspace or water meter box. With a wrench or pliers, you'll want to loosen its lock nut. Then with a screwdriver, turn the screw clockwise slightly. Now you're ready to test your bathroom faucet. Turn on your faucet..if you see a slight improvement, but want more pressure, then turn the screw a little bit clockwise. To reduce, turn counter clockwise. When you find the right amount of pressure, tighten the lock nut. If the problem is not low water pressure, then it may be something with your water lines. You'll want to double check all faucet lines have no bends in them and secured tightly. You'll also want to closely examine the faucet itself and make sure nothing is clogging the aerator, and its valve cartridge is not damaged. Sputtering water from a faucet can be caused by debris particles in the aerator. If there are no problems with either your water pressure, water lines, or faucet itself, you'll need to take a look at your water heater.
Q: How to unclog bathroom sink
Under the sink there is a P-Trap Research that on line and you'll see how easy it is to open that and drain the water. Also it will easily disassemble so you can clean it out. Hope this helps. 'av'a g'day mate. )
Q: Our bathroom sink is leaking where the trap meets the pipe that goes into the wall. How can we tell what size the pipe is? What special tools (if any) are needed? Thank you.
Well either your trap needs replacing or the fitting it is threaded into in the wall needs to be replaced. I have done this and you might have a LITTLE difficulty if you need to replace the fitting that goes into the wall. If you cannot unscrew it with a PIPE WRENCH or similar tool then try heating up the fitting with a propane torch. Be careful not to start a FIRE to any SURROUNDING areas. Just go to a Lowes or Home depot or better yet a well stocked Plumbing supply house for replacement parts. Piece of cake/it just takes a little time and patience. Buy some quality teflon paste for the threads before threading them together.
Q: The water just sits in the sink for hours.
Hi there, You can go to a hardware store and (in the plumbing department) look for something called a sink auger also may be called a sink cleanout. This device is about two feet long and looks like a spring with a hook on the end. There will be instructions on the package but basically you just insert it into the drain and rotate. The hook on the end should loosen the clog or allow you to pull the clog out. If in doubt find a clerk and tell him/her what your problem is and ask for a recommendation. I would not try any of the liquid products that claim to dissolve clogs. Usually they do not work for me. If the sink auger does not work you can remove the p-trap under the sink and usually find something is stopping it up. It will be easy to unclog the trap once it has been removed. Hope this helps, Al
Q: My girlfriend and I recently moved into a house that we recently purchased. The bathroom sink is extremely clogged...to the point that a decent strength snake cannot begin to break through. The clogging is probably a long standing build up of hair, etc. Is there a liquid that can eat through it perhaps or maybe something better than a metal snake that will clear it? We can't really afford to have a plumber come in right now, and so I want to get this cleared myself. Thanks in advance!

Q: Is it useful to use glass gluing

Q: I undid the P trap under my bathroom sink to clear a clog and now when I put the whole thing back together it leaks out of the top of the slip joint that connects the down pipe from the sink drain to the j-pipe. The down pipe is 1 - 1/4 and the j-pipe is 1-1/2 and I am using the correct reducer gasket. It was not leaking (and never had) before I took it apart. I have tried using a new gasket and teflon tape on the threads of the slip joint to no avail. Please give me some idea as to what the problem might be. Here is a link to a couple of pictures to show the general set-up and the specific problem: http://www.flickr /photos/sesquilia/?saved=1Thanks to anyone that can help.
