Q: How much insulation is required in a house roof in new York ?
The US Dept of Energy provides online calculators to answer your question based on your zip code.
Q: we replacing our torched down rubber roof and my contractor said we need to install a 1 inch rigid insulation..is the insulation needed?
There are a couple of types of torchdown, refer to the manufacturers instructions for the product being used. Most rubber or vinyl (pvc) do not fuse to the roof surface and depend on soft non-abrasive surface for maximum life.
Q: this room has an aluminum roof and hardwood siding. All the heat hit the aluminum roof
With Reynolds wrap.
Q: the best way to thermal insulate and water proofing of rcc slabs economical, may be some poly urethane material or whatever but should be very effective and light weight.
POROSIL A specially graded Light Weight Insulating Aggregate for loose fill insulation in Cavity Wall and over Suspended/False Ceiling. # 100% inorganic and Asbestos free. It will not rot, emit odours or attract vermin. # Light in weight and easy to handle. # POROSIL is the only insulating material which is Non-toxic and non-flammable at the time of fire. # Reduces unwanted heat flow making living comfortable. # Reduces the Air Conditioning Power Consumption upto 20 to 30%
Q: My boyfriend has just moved into a flat in a newly converted house. He's up in the loft, and has just discovered that the roof isn't insulated.Does the landlord have a legal obligation to insulate the roof?
To comply with UK building regulations all lofts must be insulated... Q22. How much loft insulation do I need? A22. To meet current Building Regulations you need 270mm of mineral wool insulation. 100mm between the ceiling joists and 170mm laid over the joists.
Q: I am building a porch roof over an existing patio. The rafters are fabricated I-beams. I plan on putting aluminum soffit under the I-beams. On top of the roof I would like to put down a metal roof. I already put down 3/4" OSB and a rain/ice barrier. Do I need insulation and/or ventilation on top of the rain and ice barrier, or can I get away without it?
You don't need insulation for this application. If you haven't purchased the metal yet I would recommend looking for a standing seam roof system that the panel does not come in contact with the substrate and does not use exposed fasteners. If in the future you did decide to enclose the porch and add heat you could insulate the ceiling and leave an air space under the decking that could be ventilated from the eave to the ridge. A cold roof assembly with proper ventilation will dramatically reduce the potential of the metal panels sweating.
Q: im thinking of putting rolled felt paper under my metal roofing would that work instead of the reflective insulation instead?
I installed a metal roof 5 years ago. I stripped the roof down to the plywood and put down 30# felt. This was what the manufacturer recommended. The felt is not for insulation though. The company was Metal Sales out of PA. They are glad to give advise.
Q: Hi, I have got a physics question and was just wondering about it.. Can someone pls tell me how does roof insulation work? how is it effective? How does the insulation changes the heat circulation and transfer inside a house?I know that the insulation prevents radiation from the sun and overheating.. but any more details about radiation, convection and conduction of heat pls?
Well insulation makes a dead air space (air is stagnant). Since the air is not moving the transfer of hot and cold is slowed down considerably. But since you have to create cross ventilation to reduce rotting in wood and the build up of explosive gasses. Its a crap shoot that it even does any good. Radiation is heat so that's covered by the dead air space. Convection is usually not an issue with the cross venting. Also for conduction the insulation should slow it down considerably.
Q: i live in a tropical country and i need to insulate my roof to block off the heat from the sun...which insulation would best help me? aluminum foil with foam, real foil with foam or PE with foam? pls help...thank u so much!
Use HDPE foam (high density polyethylene) - possibly with a layer of aluminum foil sandwiched in between. It's also waterproof (polystyrene isn't).
Q: i have roof insulation but if i add more to the required depth the bottom layer will get compressed. Will it still insulate?
Simple - make your bottom layer 1" styrofoam sheets- it has a higher R value per depth (1 inch of styrofoam is equal to 4 inches of fiberglass ) and it will not take-up much space and it will serve as a vapor barrier - and it will not compress when covered by fiberglass insulation. (So you can add as much R value as you want - as much as you can afford - with styrofoam sheets because they take-up such small depths in your rafters --- Also, humidity, as on rainy days or sunless winter days, decreases the R value of fiberglass -- weather conditions do not affect the R value of styrofoam sheets.
