Q: I’m moving to Las Cruces, NM in about a week and I need to get my carpets cleaned. Can anyone recommend a good carpet cleaning service? Preferably good carpet cleaners that are can remove difficult spots and stains from light colored carpets.: I've used Las Cruces Carpet Cleaning in the past and in my opinion; they are provide the absolute best service in town. They helped me clean and restore some very dirty carpets in one of our rentals back to brand new. The tenants we had didn't bother to clean the carpet before they left and it had nasty traffic lanes as well as spills everywhere, not to mention pet odors in one of the bedrooms. I really thought we would have to replace all the carpet in the house, but luckily we didn't have to. Give them a call. They saved us a ton of money.

If you have or can get a lot of old cloth, cut it in even strips and make a long, continuous braid, making sure the ends of each strip are tucked into the back side of the braid. You can then lay the braid in a tight coil and stitch it together into a round or oval rug. The different colors of cloth make an interesting pattern. This is a brief explanation, but I'm sure you can find full directions on making rag or braided rugs online.

Soap/water?: I wouldn't clean it like a normal carpet. Certainly do not steam clean it or use soap and water. There is a dry carpet cleaning method called Capture. You can usually find it at the supermarket near the other rug cleaning products, or at a DIY home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot. It comes in a kit. You sprinkle the stuff on the carpet -- its sort of semi-damp and clumpy -- then use the brush that comes with the kit to rub the stuff into the stain or the entire rug. Let it sit for a bit, then vacuum up the residue. I have used this on my wool area rugs in the past and it works great.
