Q: We just moved and our house has all hardwood floors. I have swept and mopped the floors several times but they are still dirty. My wife cleans the floors with Murphy's Soap oil, and when it's good and dry, she uses Orange Glo Hardwood floor 4 in 1 floor cleaner, and applies it with a Swiffer Sweeper and dry Swiffer mop pad . It gives a fresh look to the floors. Many times, she skips the Murphy's and just uses the Orange Glo. This works as good as we can keep it with our dog circumstances. Papaw

Q: My old flooring has quarter round trim at baseboards. I want to install laminate flooring over old, do I HAVE to take up the quarter round? Is there some other trim that can go on the new flooring edges that butts up to the existing quarter round?: No. Rip up the old quarter round. If you cannot get it up without damaging it, then just replace it. The laminate flooring should extend to about 1/4 of the wall, and that gap is covered by the quarter round. You do not want multiple runs of quarter round going around the room that would be just plain silly.

Q: We have a huge basement that we have bamboo flooring to lay down on. The question is...I heard that floating the floor will actually devalue the house because it is a cheap way to do the floors. Is this true and we have a cement slab to install the flooring on...how would you do it?: floating floors are great, the only problem I have noticed is when you walk on them with hard healed shoes they tend to sound hollow. ( I did three rooms at our church). I noticed at Lowes that they now have cork to go under the flooring instead of the foam stuff. Although the cork is more expensive, I would think it would take care of the hollow sound. Other than the sound, they look great and are holding up really well (we put the in them nurseries and put down area rugs for the babies to play on.

Q: My bathroom floor is currently covered with linoleum. I plan to strip the floor of this down to the sub-flooring (wood). What steps will I need to take to ceramic tile my bathroom floor? What things will I have to buy and in what order from start to finish to go from sub-floor to completed ceramic floor?Thanks!10 POINTS to the best answer!!!: After you strip the floor you will need to make your it is sound and secure. You need a smooth clean surface. For a bathroom you need dura roc or hardie backer as an underlayment. You will need to do a dry setting of the tiles. That means lay the tiles out to figure the best pattern and get an idea as to space etc. once you know how you want the tiles laid start cutting. You will need a mastic/thinset to set the tiles...whichever one you choose just follow directions. The directions will tell you what size trial you will need to spread the mastic/thin set. as you set the tiles insert spacers they come in different sizes. after all the tiles are set, let sit for 24 hrs. clean out any grout lines and remove the spacers. now you are ready to grout. grout comes in different colors and there is a sanded grout and a non sanded. When you buy the tile ask the sales person which grout you need for that tile, sanded or non sanded. some tiles will scratch with sanded tile. follow directions on the grout. make sure you wipe of any clumps of grout or it may not come off. lightly wipe extra grout as your grouting. there will be a haze over the tiles. you can wipe over the tile very lightly every few hours.
