Q: I want it to be easy to use.: My mother gave me a Roomba vacuum for Christmas, and I just love it. It's very easy to use, just turn it on and it goes by itself, around furniture and any obstacle and turns around when it gets to the stairs. We have tile and area rugs (like under the dining room table, etc.) and it doesn't do so well on the rugs. For the tile and wood floor, it's great.

Q: I have never bought a hoover or a vacuum cleaner and need some recommendations. Dont want to spend too much money on it. Will mostly use it to vacuum my carpet. Please provide links for recommendations.: We've had good vacuum cleaners that lasted almost 20 yrs before the motor died. That one was about $300. Then we couldn't afford to spend as much and a friend bought a great vacuum at Sears with a 12 amp and does a great job. This Sears vacuum was about $150. Not too many cheap vacuums out now that do a good job unless you buy the new powerful Dyson brand for much more money. Q: My husband has really long, really strong hair. We've killed quite a few vacuum cleaners with his hair (the hair wraps around the spinny thing and inevitably breaks the motor). Because of this, I'm assuming I can't get that kind of vacuum cleaner: stand up vacuum with the spinning brush. What type and/or brand of vacuum should I get?: What ever brand you purchase, take a little responsibility, trim the hair from the roller brush on occasion, with a scissors, and yank it out.

Q: I should also add that I need a vacuum cleaner that has strong suction and is good for picking up cat hair.: I have a couple of Oreck vacuum cleaners. They have disposable bags. They are powerful and light weight. You need the Oreck hand vacuum that goes with the upright Oreck as there is no hose on the main unit. Oreck has a small vacuum with all the hose attachments and it also has a disposable bag. Very handy for doing stairs. I've had mine for about eight years with no problems at all.

The reason the hoovers (sic) were so called is that it sounded terribly scientific in an age (many, many years ago) that the science was an ultra-important thing, to the average Mrs of a household, specially in America. But my theory is simpler - a goddam sucker does not sound so very nice, and in the 1930's it would not have gone down well with the middle class US who were the people who would be buying them. Not even 60 years ago in the uk, wives would beat the carpets on the line out in the back yard 'cos they no way could afford a 'hoover' - think on't, lad...... They had no washing machine. They hadn't even heard of a dish washer. Most houses here had not got central heating, a telephone of any sort, and half had no fridge they used a 'larder' and shopped every day since nothing would keep. Points to ponder, what your Gran and Parents lived through, innit?
