- I would probably crochet a throw rug rather than knit, but if you're determined... Definitely use a chunky weight or extra bulky yarn, or use 3 strands of worsted weight together. Use size 15 or larger knitting needles - circular if you can get them if you're going to make a fairly large rug.
- Q:I'm getting ready to put new frieze carpet (similar to a shaggy carpet). I have a dyson vacume cleaner I have heard that it doesnt vacume that well on frieze carpet. Is that true? Is that type of carpet durable? Thanks for your feedback.
- I can't answer for the dyson question, but I have frieze carpet in my house and love it. the husband wanted full blown shag and I compromised (I wanted berber) any way, it is durable, tough and does not mat.really happy with it and we have it in the highest traffic areas of our house - the hallway and stairs as well as the master bathrooms. every time I vacuum, it looks just like it did the day they put it in. I have a kirby and vacuuming it is a breeze. I have not had any issues other than not being able to find earrings in the carpet if I drop them. It cleans beautifully as well.

- Set your vacuum on the highest pile setting, the one that sets the brushes the furthest from the floor. If your vacuum does not come with different settings, make the best of the setting you’re forced to use. Vacuum away. Shag works best with short, back and forth motions to pull the pile up as much as possible and avoid the vacuum getting stuck and smelling like it's about to burst into flames. Work your way with the vacuum left to right across the floor and, for good measure, go back over it in the perpendicular direction. Disconnect the vacuum hose and use the open tube to suck up dirt. Place the hose’s nozzle straight down into the carpet, methodically covering the entire area. This is a lengthy process but you will be amazed at how much dirt, grime and other disgusting stuff you are able to extract from the shag when you sit down and really concentrate. This does not have to be done often unless your carpet gets very heavy wear. A couple of times each year should do the trick.
- Q:The rug cleaning company wants $300 to clean the rugs, $200 to deodorize them and $200 for a protection service that will help them stay clean. Are the extras worth it? We do have two cats, but our carpets don't get a lot of wear. They aren't visibly dirty, but I'd like to get them cleaned before getting some new furniture.

- Hmm. A perennial problem is rug rubbing! First of all, look at the style of the rug and see if there is another style you could get. Some rugs are better for different shapes of horse than others. Horse and Hound did some articles on different types of rugs. Look them up on horseandhound .uk and go to archives. Also rub surgical spirits into areas that are already rubbing to toughen the skin and prevent sores. Also good to put on the saddle and girth areas of an unfit horse a few days before saddling him. I think from the length of the rug that he is a pretty large horse, so I would go for an extra large if he has a particularly wide chest, or large if his chest is not so wide. or measure him from shoulder to shoulder and from withers to tops of his legs and phone the company and see what they suggest. It is difficult to tell without seeing the horse.
- Q:My brother has an area rug that constantly bunches. It is on top of carpet and we put a pad with that gripping surface under it, but it still won't stay put. We need something that will keep it from wrinkling every time someone walks on it. Is there a product (besides duct tape) that will do this?
- I know you said duct tape but why not try some wide double sided tape?
- Q:I spilled Coca-cola on my area rug. The rug is relatively inexpensive and I've never spilled liquid on it. I decided it would be a brilliant idea to sop up as much liquid as I could with a towel and paper towels and then pour baking soda all over it, which I then proceeded to rub in. (I know, idiotic). The stain is now hard and crusty and I cant seem to vacuum it out. Any advice?
- Not all is lost. Break up the crusties as much as possible and vacuum, probably just use the hose, not the various heads. Keep doing this until you'd removed as much as possible. If you have a clothes brush, use that to help as you vacuum. When you've done as much as you can, time to switch methods: first put a towel, shower curtain or whatever under your throw rug as you don't want to ruin the floor under neath.......if vinyl.......relax. Anyway. Make a solution of OxyClean.....I'd say a scoop to a quart of warm water.....mix well and then apply it to the stain.........if your carpet doesn't have latex on the back and you can move it to the tub.....pour the Oxyclean over the stain. Otherwise pour a bit on.......1/4 cup or so, rub with your fingers and immediately begin blotting it out with a clean towel......white or light colored just in case you get a color run from the towel. Repeat applying and blotting it up. That should do it. I doubt you'll need the whole quart. OH yes, finish with a clear water rinse and plenty of blotting. Check the towel or whatever underneath and replace it if wet. Let the rug air dry. No hair dryers as heat will set stains. Of course we hope like anything the OxyClean doesn't remove the color from your rug.....if you have bright colors.....use a weaker solution. OxyClean ihydrogenen peroxide which will bleach colors if in a very concentrated formula which it in the in the original mixture I mentioned.

I just need someone to remove and install it. I live in the Piedmont Triad area in North Caroline. Please help.
- Removing glue-down or any carpet does not require any special skill, only some amount of strength and the proper tools. You will need a good utility knife with a couple of packs of sturdy replacement blades. You can use the knife to cut thru the carpet, making it into approx 3x3' or 4x4' sections. Then just start pulling the carpet up. Cut one section at a time, remove it then proceed to the next. If any foam is left stuck to the floor, you only need to remove the thick sections. A small amount can be left stuck to the floor since the new carpet and pad, will cover this. You can use a stiff 3-4 wide putty knife to scrape off the foam that's left behind or rent or buy a scraping tool, on a long pole to do the job. I have done it with just a putty knife. Then get some estimates for new carpet and installation. Home D and Lowes offer almost free install.
