- Q:im using a cement backer board why do i need a scratch coat and mesh?
- More info is needed, but if on the wall glued and screwed to the studs you will not need anything else. (backer-on screws ) help because they countersink themselves. On A floor application the minium substrate suggested is 1 1/4 inches total, but I NEVER use less than 1 1/2 inches combined. Plywood only I do not use OSB board for tile at all. If using Marble tile or large 12x12 or larger tile, there can not be flex in the floor because grout will pop, and crack and the tile or Marble will not hold up. Thicker is certainly better. I also install cement board with thin-set over plywood nailed and screwed to secure. I have never used a scratch coat with cement board, I would just use the true mud base if needed. I hope this helps you, but please give more info next time. SO normal tile installations with cement type adhesive ( thin-set )

- Use backerboard screws, (or galvanized nails/screws) If you want overkill use stainless screws.. Some say you should 1st install a waterproof membrane to protect the wood framing from moisture ie Tyvek or felt paper etc. backerboard will not be damaged by water but it is not a waterprrof barrier. I don't know that for sure but better safe than sorry. Seams in wonderboard/hardiboard etc should be taped w/ fibreglass tape and tile adhesive. Edit: I just read your additioanl comments. I would extend the tile beyond the backerboard seams.

- If by repair, you mean replacing some boards, keep in mind that combining old cedar with new cedar can create its own set of problems: The two different-aged materials will shrink and expand at different rates, and that could cause problems. Also, the boards will have different life spans, because they are different ages. If the old boards that you are keeping are over 45-50 years, they might actually last longer than the new ones. New cedar is just not as good quality as very old cedar, but might be better than 20 year-old siding. If you can afford it, and like the way it looks, the cement-board will last as long as you keep the house.

- Hardyboard is a composite/concrete siding that may work. If your boards are only slightly damaged you may be able to patch them with concrete patch then repaint. A lot cheaper than replacing.

- Use mesh tape and thinset mortar. They make a special tape for this that is wider than the mesh you use for drywall. Hope this helps.

- If the tub wall is on an outside wall it should be insulated & then sealed with plastic, then durock, then the tile. For sound purposes you can insulate the other walls also.
