Q:I was doing some homemade circuit wiring and had a plug wired to a push button switch, wired to the load,(lamp light) then wired back to the plug. My question is the first time around I used 14g wire and it worked fine, light came on at the push button. Second time I used the same plug, 16gauge wire wired to the switch, to the load(this time a miniature bulb that sat in a smaller version of those pull lights in closets) and then back to the plug. When it was switched on nothing happened. So I went back to the 16gauge and wired it up and the bulb popped. Is this because the wire used is to small and not rated to carry the amps provided by the wall receptacle?
Maybe an electrician would have done it better and stopped you almost killing yourself or starting a fire!
Q:I am trying to take 4 lights in the basement that currently all have to be turned on independently and wire them all in series to a single switch. I just took the wires and put them to the switch and then to the first light. it came on but when i held the silver metal shielding piece that houses the wires, I got a tingle. I think that would mean I need to connect the third wire. The grounding one. The light did come on which I think means I had the pos and neg connected right. Where do I connect the ground wire and what caused the tingle? by ground wire I mean the third wire that is nothing but copper. I think I just put it to the case or the light or whatever looks like a good spot to get grounded. any extra knowledge or advice is a big help! In the mean time I will be searching the web for how to's.
You have your hot wire insulation striped and touching the Greenfield (the metal covering). You need to find the striped area and tape it. Or Buy some Romex wiring 14/2 with ground and replace all the Greenfield in this circuit. You can run the wires from light to light to light. Attach the black wire to the black wire (hot), white to white (neutral or common), bare copper wire (ground) to bare copper wire. Attach black wire to switch, White wire to white in switch box, bare copper to green wire (ground).
Q:I just installed a Unity Spotlight on my 2007 Chevy Impala. There's a 6 inch wire coming out of the handle. When I stripped the wire there is a few strands of copper wire. How do I wire up the light? There isn't a distinct positive or negative.
I okorder /... check out literature for others, if this don't help.
Q:I attempted to change a bathroom fan to a new one with the help of a friend. He disconnected all the wiring without paying attention to what he was doing and what was wired where. We have a set of wires coming from somewhere (I presume the fuse box) to the fan that is hot regardless of the switch being on or off. That has a black, white and naked wire in it. Then we have another wire that comes from the switch that has black, white and naked as well. The fan has black, white and green. Can someone please tell me how to connect these as we have tried everything and the only thing that works is wired to the constant hot which of course won't allow us to turn the fan off with the switch...
Follow Eaglewatcher's instructions and not only will it work, but you will be in compliance with the National Electric Code. When ever a switch is fed with a black and white cable the white Must Be used as the Hot. And it Must Be Permanently Identified as such. Most of us use a sharpie or black tape to do this. NEC Article 200.7(C)(2) Good luck.
Q:I thought plug wires were plug wires. I know there is a difference between coil pack wires and distributor wires. Do i have to use specific brands depending on vehicle?
not all plug wires are the same ! there are 7mm and 8 mm plug wires ! what plug wires came off of your car ? get the same mm wires that were on it !
Q:The output part of wire plastic and part of wire broken, and the connection lost sometimes, some taps used to wrap up but the connection is still not good. How to fix it permanently?
Only try to fix it if it is on the lptop side, DON't play with A/C power unless you're qualified. If it is on the safe voltage side you could cut the wire, strip back the wires about 1cm, and twist them together, then solder the wires. Before you join them slide a small piece of heatshrink over one side of it, then after joining and soldering the wires wrap a small amount of electrical tape around the bare wires then slide the heatshrink over it all and heat it up to enclose it all, Fixed ! If you need help with it let me know. Cheers,
Q:Can your use the power wire that they sell at home depo to do the big three upgrade or is it better to just get wire from a car audio store?
yup you can use any wire as long as it can handle the amps to calculate take the watts of the amp divide it by the voltage which will be 12 and that will tell you how many amps your wire may need to handle i would double the amps in the end to be safe and if you want to upgrade your system think about even heavier wire the bigger the better
Q:The infamous headlight switch please help
What is so infamous about plugging the wiring to the switch? It will only plug in one way. UPDATE 8/6/11: In over 45 years, I've only replaced one headlight switch that had melted and that was on a 1994 Plymouth Acclaim and the driver had left the headlights on all night and yes it drained the battery. The plastic plug had melted but the wires had not burned through, so I had something to work with. There is a possibility you can find a wiring diagram on Auto Zones website for your car, they do have an extensive library or you could try to find a Haynes manual for your car. Or if you are low on $$ if you tell us what manufacturer, model, year of car you drive someone here might be able to help.
Q:do speakers function better with thick or thin wires??
well thicker wire is best especially if you have amps and subs, you can go to walmart, autozone or advanced autoparts and buy speaker wire, you can buy a roll of it, it'll say speaker wire on the roll, but stock speaker like 6 1/2 or 6x9s only need the thinner wire but you'll need the thicker speaker wire for subs and amps
Q:hi can anyone help i am currently building a 50cc scooter up from scratch i have most parts but ive started on the wiring does anyone know where i can get a wiring diagram also what wire recharges the battery from the magnetic pickup thanks
