- I use 3 parts of Portland cement to 2 parts of sand for such a repair. First take and clean out the area of all loose materials and then coat it with a coat of Latex paint. Then mix the Portland and sand dry, then add to about a gallon of the mixture a 1/4 cut of that latex paint, add water to suit giving a consistency of tooth paste. Fill the hole, let it sit for at least 2 hours, then scrape it neatly with a trowel, leveling it. This bond with the latex is about the best around, better that any sort of stuff sold at Lowes or Home Depot. Our local hardware store has Portland cement in 10# bags so you dont have to go out and get a 100# bag. Buy your bagged sand right there too. DO NOT use the premix stuff ( sand and cement) in a bag, simply not enough Portland in that stuff and a sure way to have a failure of this patch.
- Q: Hey, I was working with cement dust and it was windy, and ended up going everywhere - I mean my eyes, hair, and I breathed a lot of it in. The chemical may have a direct caustic effect that irritates the skin-a minor chemical burn. Or, more often, the chemical may cause an allergic reaction of the skin, resulting in a rash. - Q: I have a question about subfloor and tiling.. our kitchen and dining room are connected, and our dining room has hardwood floor and the kitchen just has a lineolm currently.. we are remodeling our kitchen and tiling.. we know the correct thing to do is lay down a cement backer board, our question is, do we take up the current subfloor? im afraid if we dont that once we put the cement board down and then the tile down, THEN the kitchen floor will be higher than the dining room.. so, again, taking the current subfloor off, and just seeing the original floor boards that run diagonally (i know it does that from looking from the basement up).. and then lay the cement board on there, and then the tile, can that be done?? - You need the subfloor for strength, you cannot pull it up. They do have a friendly moulding that also dresses up the area from the kitchen to the dining room, that stops you from tripping.

- its bad, you should be using a face mask, it can cause a disease called silicoses, and it works on your lungs over time like cement hardens. look it up.

- you don't stain cement you paint it!! that is why you are having to redo it every year. cement does not absorb things paint is thicker and will stick to the cement.
- Q: We are painting our living room floor. My husband wanted me to buy a BEHR cement paint stain at Home Depot. However, they didn't have the colors we wanted available in that paint, so they told me that the BEHR Porch and Floor paint was exactly the same (the stain just has the option of semi-translucent colors, whereas the other does not) and they had a better variety of colors. I trusted the people, but have I made a big mistake, what is the difference? I'm nervous my husband will be very upset when he gets home, since it is non-refundable.
- Cement stain is very different from paint. However the big advantage to paint is that you can patch any cracks in the cement and the paint will cover those patches completely. You can't do that with stain. Stain will show your patches. I have used Behr cement paint on a patio and I was very happy with it. Maybe your husband will be happy with it after all. I thought they could mix any color of stain just like they can mix any color of paint? You should probably call Home Depot to see if that paint guy knew what he was talking about. It's good paint though. You'll like working with it.
