- Q: I am trying to hang a 30 LBS item from a drop ceiling, with no luck. I would like to use 2-3 eyebolts to distribute the weight, but everytime I think I figured it out, it pulls right through. The ceiling can't be very thick at all. Can this be done?
- You need to use extra large toggle bolts or get in the attic and find a joist to attach to.

- Q: Was tearing out an acoustical ceiling grid while the electrician was taking out the fluorescent lights. What I didn't know was that he was taking them out hot. He left wires uncapped and the hot leg touched the grid I had ahold of. It grabbed me for about 3 seconds. My head snapped back and I could feel my mouth open to scream but nothing came out. I was aware of everything going on and my only thought was that I was going to die. Luckily I fell backwards off the ladder. I had burns on my left hand and right forearm and stomach. Everywhere I was touching the grid. My arms were cherry red from the elbows down for awhile. 2 weeks later my arms still tingle and my wrists have a terrible burning pain every couple of days. It was a very religious experience. I did kick the electrician off the job. My question is did the current go across my chest or through my heart from one arm to the other and could it have killed me if I hadn't fallen from the ladder. I guess I'm lucky I'm 6'4 and 250 lbs. I feel lucky anyway.

- Q: I currently have gold fiberglass, paperbacked insulation under my first floor/ on basement ceiling. (Between the joists of course) I was considering replacing it with rigid styrofoam board (blue or pink) insulation for a cleaner more attractive appearance that can even be painted. i realize this wouldnt be cheap and there would be a lot of cutting involved, and then a lot of sealing up gaps with foam spray and such. I was wondering how good the insulating properties would be as well as the sound insulation properties. Could the styrofoam insulation perform better than the fiberglass bats i have now? I'm also not sure what thickness I would need to do the duties of the fiberglass. The fiberglass is about 6 thick. What are the potential positives or negatives i could gain from the installation?
- Rigid Styrofoam 2 thick is not going to give you the R value that 6 of fiberglass insulation has = R 19. However it will look a little better. It will be expensive as a 4' x 8' sheet of 2 Dow styrofoam is about $20. You will have a lot of cutting to do also. Sometimes there is not an easy way to make a basement ceiling look good. You could install a suspended grid ceiling but as you know there are lots of pipes,ductwork,wires to go around - some of them will still remain below the ceiling. If you have the money and the time - go ahead with the styrofoam and yes you can paint it - black ceilings make the ceiling disappear. Paint all the pipes,ductwork first with black spray paint, Then paint all the styrofoam panels before cutting and fitting between the joist - touch up the cut edges after it is installed. Record some measurements to help you later find any valves,ductwork boots (floor register boxes for upstairs) and other things you may need to locate, then you will only need to remove certain styrofoam panels to get to these important locations. You already know and have thought about this a lot, So go with your instincts. If i could see it - I could tell you what I would do. Good Luck

- Great Link MM, but I don't see anything in the text that suggests the FREE space above all the grid work and tiles. Beyond that the text deals with a basement, and/or an area of exposed rafters. Normal drop ceiling requires a drop in the area of 8 inches minimum. I'd be doing Ceiling Max to cover damaged ceilings if I could get to within and inch or 2 of the old. The process, as explained is no different than normal grid install for a drop ceiling. I'll do more research however. The Q nudged an issue I have in a home, and I do drop ceilings with my Son often, commercially.

- Q: I'm putting suspended ceiling in my basement (using Armstrong tiles). Unfortunately, on one of the walls, the level of the ceiling has to be above the top level of the wall framing (it's a long story involving a structural beam, some heating vents and a window), so there are no studs behind the drywall where I need to attach the wall molding. Would molly bolts or something like that be able to support the weight of the suspended ceiling, should I try to cut some wood to fit and block in behind the drywall, or is there something else that I should do?
