- Q: Hi, about 2 weeks ago I was in my ex boyfriend's attic (with his permission! lol) and he noticed a crack, which turned into a hole when I slipped and almost fell through into the bedroom! If you lie in bed you can now see right through to the attic; while it could be considered a design feature, my ex isn't keen on it :-) It's not very big, probably only 1.5ft square if that but obviously the plaster is missing, one of the lathes (think that's what they're called; the thin pieces of wood just behind the plaster) is broken in half and poking throught he hole and little bits of the fibreglass indsulation are falling down. My ex told his landlord who said it would cost ?150 to repair the damage, but I'm convinced my ex could do it himself...but how? Any ideas? I have been offered a large piece of plasterboard, could he use this in any way and would he have to enlarge the hole to replace the entire lathe? How does he replaster...etc - help please!

- Q: We had our carpets removed a while ago and installed laminate flooring instead. As a result, the house is not as warm as it used to be.Will it help if I add R13 insulation in the basement ceiling ? Will it keep the living room floor (which is just above the basement) warmer ?On the same manner, will adding another layer of insulation to the attic help in the winter and summer as well ?As for the mositure barrier paper, if I understand correctly, it should be facing up both cases, right ?
- I post some insulation in my storage that's below my mattress room and that i do experience the version - I grew up in Philly and we live in a row residing house and our basement replaced into some what under floor so all we had to do replaced into insulate the residing house windows - yet once you have partitions that are dealing with the wind you are able to ought to post some thing there additionally - warmth will upward thrust some in case you are able to insulate your attic that's going to help - in case you have severe ceilings you additionally can decide to think of a pair of ceiling fan
- Q: Hi,The felt (or whatever it is made of) ceiling in my car is falling down. I have scraped most of the residual glue off the ceiling made out of fiberglass and what I can off of the carpet/felt part. I've tried a couple of different types of two sided tape and can't get it to stick. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance...
- There is a headliner repair spray available at auto parts store. You spray it on the ceiling and the material your are trying to reattach, let it tack up, and then press into place. Works ok unless there is too much residual insulation on the ceiling.
- Q: My insulation was installed paper towards the roof.
- Yes it matters! Paper side should go down (toward the living space) because the paper side has a vapor barrier that will trap any moisture. If you install it backwards, you'll trap moisture in your insulation and make it less efficient. If you are installing additional insulation over existing, you can install the paper side up and then cut the paper side to provide an escape for and vapor.
- Q: Not sure how to spell something that sounds like "ah-spec-tice" please tell me where I can get into on aspectice.
- asbestos? Probably not, unless your house is really old. You probably have fiberglass insulation. Some old ceiling tiles maybe had asbestos, but not in recent years.
- Q: I just bought a home with an unfinished basement. I was thinking of finishing the basement and creating a game room. I wanted to soundproof it but I dont want to spend a ton of money. I know that I can buy soundproof drywall but that stuff is expensive! Is there anything that I can stuff between the ceiling beams to soundproof the room? I dont want to put in a double layer of sheetrock becuase the ceiling is already only 7 feet. Thanks!
- Well, seeing as you don't have a whole lot of room down there, the best thing is soundboard. What's above it? Are you able to add anything to the floor above? Egg cartons work FANTASTIC!!! I have used them twice before. The second time, I sprayed them with foam and you could not hear ANYTHING upstairs. It does take away height tho'. They are very cheap to buy, but a pain the you know what to install. Well worth it for me though. Good Luck!
