- Q: I‘m making a sign that hangs on a door. So it‘s doing to have a circular hook.Imagine a rectangle and a half circle on top so the sign can hang. I already made the rectangle part but I‘m having trouble making the hook. How would I be able to do this?(This is my first time using ceramics) I tried making the shape and putting it on and adding more clay to make it look like one whole piece but it just broke off. :/ What should I do?
- You were supposed to make the whole thing at one time. if I already made the rectangle part means you fired it or dried it out completely in anticipation of firing then you have to fire the curved part and glue it on. If not fired and not totally dry, then you apparently can affix them together by making a clay slip with paper mixed in which acts as a better glue than just scratching the surfaces and using clay slip which is discussed in every pottery book I have seen.

- Q: I‘ve been doing a little research about brake pads since I have to have mines changed and found that I could purchase them myself at possibly discounted prices. I called a few mechanics and it seems that even if I brought my own pads in, it would still cost almost the same to have them installed then if I just leave everything up to them. But one mechanic said his price was $139 for ceramic brake pads, installation, and rotor resurfacing. Another mechanic said that ceramic brake pads are better but some have come back complaining that it still makes a noise. He‘s charging around $150-160 for premium brake pads - close to the ones that the car comes standard with. Obviously it seems I should go for the other guy but the I‘ve gone to the second guy before so I‘m familiar with him.

Also, you don't want your pads to wear out and damage the rotor, so ceramics would be more insurance against that.

- Only use ceramic in the microwave. All plastic leeches out toxic chemicals when they are heated. Don't even put the plastic ones in that come with prefrozen foods in and say put in microwave.

However, ceramics have a few drawbacks: 1) they tend to have more friction than metal, and treatment can take longer. 2) they are more expensive than metal, and a lot of medical aid schemes / medicare (whatever you call it) will not cover the cost as its seen as a cosmetic item. 3) They stain. If you drink coffee, coke, tea, eat curries (or even sneak the occasional cigarette.) your nice, new white ceramic braces will turn into gunky yellow after 6 months. This is a problem, because your teeth look yellow and gross, it looks as if you did not brush your teeth. Metal braces look like braces, and no one bats an eyelid. Ceramic braces looks like you ate carrots for breakfast and then did not brush. My advice: go metal. I've literally had both types, and there is NO advantage of ceramic over metal.
