- When you set your system up to play in stereo mode and not in encompass sound mode you'll be good enough. Stereo mode tells the encompass sound receiver you best have two speakers so all the knowledge will get routed to those two audio system. For those who set it for surrond sound mode then the receiver will think you might have the additional audio system and you'll by and large free the middle channel dialog. I think you can set the receiver up for subwoofer none in order that the subwoofer frequencies are routed to your major speakers. You could easily spend $750 - $1000 on a basic Home Theater System and still be at the entry-level point. I think what you are looking for is 'Better than my TV's built-in speakers' option. In this caseSoundbars are probably the best economical choice. A Soundbar is pretty much an array of speakers built in a bar meant to sit above or below your TV screen. The array of speakers creates a virtual surround sound experience. Even the cheapest ones ($100 or less) will sound tons better than your built-in speakers. You can spend more and get one that has a separate sub-woofer for bass. It's probably your best bet for better sound without buying a reciever/amplifier and 5.1 speaker set-up

- The rear speakers only are limited in frequency coming from the receiver. It is mainly used for sound effects. They do not get any frequency lower than 80 HZ, which is normally sent to the subwoofer. Bose are not a very good or reliable speakers. You are not going to find any Bose speakers being recommend by any Magazine that reviews speakers. Beside that they are over priced. You can use just about any speakers for the rear channel.

- Are you use computer speakers or speakers that have an amplifier with them? A computer audio out is not speaker level. It's much to low to drive speakers without an amplifier. It can drive headphones and the line-in to an amplifier but not speakers directly.

- KLH has been around for decades. I am currently sitting next to a pair of KLH floor speakers that were made around 1970 and cost around $800. They still work today. As far as their new products, I don't have much experience with those. I had a relative of mine hook up some small KLH speakers outside around his pool and they sounded ok, but not anything like the 10 woofer units I have from 39 years ago.
