Q: I have Pergo flooring in my kitchen. a couple pieces in the middle have chipped. any suggestions on how to go about fixing this?? do i need to completely pull up the flooring.? looking for a trick of the trade. :-)thanks in advance: Other than gluing the chips back in place, the next reasonable solution is to deconstruct the floor to the chipped pieces and rearrange the tiles with the chips somewhere not in the middle, or replace them altogether. If counters were placed on top of the floor, this would be a lot harder.

If it is oak or another wood that has a tight grain it is much easier . . . . or the new laminate flooring. If it is pine it could be harder and take more patient work. To try the easy methods, scrape up big blobs with a hard plastic scraper found in the cleaning the dishes aisle.. . .or an old credit card, or even a fingernail. For that last little bit, use a steel wool scrub pad, like SOS. Be gentle though. If you put too much muscle into it, you can scrub off the finish. If you don't have an SOS pad, try one of those bath scrubbies made of nylon. . . .or try something made for gentle exfoliation in the shower. The trick is to get the paint without getting the finish. Freshest paint is the easiest. Old paint takes more work. You can also try heating up the paint with a hair dryer before scraping it off. Do NOT use one of those paint removing heat guns. More isn't always better. You will end up marring the finish.

Q: I have a oak floor that was sanded about 3 mos. ago....a beautiful job you'd never know it was a floor over 50 yrs. old. the person who did this is a perfectionist and it shows. unfortunately by accident there is a small scratch...looking for suggestions on touching up scratches on a wood floor, some people say mix cigarette ashes and cooking oil...not sure that's a good choice plus we don't smoke and neither do we have anyone close who does. is there a better suggestion thanks.: Call the person who did your floors. He likely knows of a real product that you can use to hide the scratch. It will depend on what products he used to finish your floor so don't just try something randomly. It will have to be compatible with what is already on the finished floor. Beyond that, you might consider that scratches are going to happen and get over that first imperfection in your floor with the understanding that it's going to show wear eventually.
