- Q: How can I cover a slate floor with carpeting.
- If its the gauged slate that is smooth and not a rough texture you can go over it with pad and carpet as normal. The tack strips will have to be glued and screwed into the sub floor. This will have to be treated as a slab or basement floor installation. Its possible to glue direct the carpet but the slate must be clean and solidly attached. Then you must treat the grout lines so the lines on t show through the carpet. Check all exterior doors to make sure you have clearances. Interior doors can be trimed down. - The others have said it correctly. A floor jack is a hydraulic jack, but not all hydraulic jacks are floor jacks. There are bottle jacks which you place in a spot and jack them up and floor jacks which have wheels to move them around easier. Floor jacks also usually lower to a lower level than bottle jacks and have a larger gripping surface plate that holds the vehicle much more securely. A floor jack also can not tip over the way a bottle jack can. (or sink into soft ground as easily) The 2 ton or larger is usually a good size and a set of jack stands are a good additional safety item to go with the jack. They will hold the vehicle up in case the jack loses its hydraulic fluid through a leak or simply not being locked in the up position properly. A floor jack also positions the pumping lever further away from the parts that actually lift the vehicle. This allows it to be pumped up from beside the vehicle vs a bottle jack where you have to pump the handle while under the vehicle.

- Try checking on TV programs like This Old House, and places like Habitat Restore Call your local Habitat for Humanity , if you don't find their restore in your phone book. Look in old DIY magazines for place that sold the flooring at the time. They may still be in operation and sell what you are looking for. Short of that, a master carpenter should be able to make you some repacement pieces. My Dad was a master carpenter....thats how I know IT CAN BE DONE !!! Just be sure you get one who knows what he is doing...there are some carpenters that aren't worth the sawdust in their clothing or ears. Check with a local reputable carpenter shop, they may have a carpenter willing to work on the side to help you out. I would recomend my Dad but he is now with The Master Carpenter and has been for many years now. Parquet flooring is beautiful flooring. But if all else fails; buy the thin parquet flooring to match and fill in with some plywood as back filler. Depending on the thickness of the original flooring, you can use several thin layers of plywood or one thickness plus a thin to get the right thickness. Example: 3/8 ths + 1/4 th, 5/8ths +1/4th, or several of the 1/4 th inch plywood. You may have to sand it down a tad depending.... Hope this helps you out...I tried to think of as many places as I could. Oh, try salvage stores...sometimes they are are almost as good as the Habitat Restores. :-)

- You can do it in one aplication, it would be better. With a chissel make small dents on the existing floor in case it's cement or concreet and that would make the leveling compound better.
