- Q: i need to cut a hole in ceramic floor tile. i have tried many things such as dremel with different ceramic tile cutting attachments and a carbide hole saw.what should i try next?
- In the plumbing section of most hardware stores a cable saw can be found its used to cut pipe in hard to reach areas. some will cut tile. In the drill bit area find a Glass/ Tile bit big enough for the cable and go to it. a coping saw may work other thought. use tile bit to start and nippers, files will work as well use water as a lube. I hope someone else has a better Idea for you.

- Q: Anyone have any experience with using glass mosaic tile as the kitchen counter material (not just as the backsplash)? This would be for a lightly used area of my kitchen counter by the sink - not the primary work area. Would love to hear any pros and cons. Thanks!
- I have not yet run across a glass tile that is rated for use on a kitchen counter top. They will scratch too easily for use on a kitchen counter, and are more for a wall application. Ceramic is ok for a counter top, but does not usually come in a mosaic. Ther are a few though. Maybe you are making your own mosaic? Ceramic would be the easiest to work with. If it has a shiney finish though, it will show scratches with wear. Porcelain comes in mosaic sheets and is very durable. I personally wouldn't want a mosaic countertop because it would be uneaven, and have lots of grout. But if you are sure that's what you want, be sure to buy grout sealer, and use the correct cleaners so that sealer stays on! Or grout with an epoxy grout, it won't stain. It is hard to work with though.
- Q: Recently, my carpet got a bit singed in front of the fireplace. so, I decided to place tile in front of the fireplace. I plan to remove the carpet and the padding. what will be left is the plywood and 2x4‘s. not exactly sure if there is anything under the plywood since this was an addition and is on top of the garage, where the garage is not underground but has cinderblock walls. when my son jumps around, it kinda shakes the floor.what I need to know is if cement board has to be used. can I just place tile over plywood with the appropriate adhesive? remove plywood all together? what is the simplest method for a single momma with low funds who is not familiar with laying tile? my second inquiry is about finishing it off. I can do the grout easy enough, but what about where the tile meets the carpet? I really hate the cheap look of those metal things, but I don‘t know what other options there are except for folding (?) the carpet under (?). suggestions?thanks in advance!!
- In the very least you ll need cement board. For 2 reasons.. One is to have the proper support so the tile won t break and the second is because its fire code ( unless this is a sealed gas fireplace) to have a non combustible in front of the fire place.. There are codes on how big this must be also. Not doing so could possible void any fire insurance you have if a fire should occur.. As far as fixing the carpet it s best to turn and tack the carpet to the tile.. You ll need a carpet installer to do this.. - Ceramic tiles can be painted. There is even special paint to do this with. Just check out the paint section of your local hardware store or talk to one of the staff.
- Q: What type/color tile will mesh with this wall coloring?
- I love your color scheme- brown and pink is one of my favorites. I think a nice bright white would look really sophisticated with your paint job, plus it will go with pretty much anything you decide to shift to in the future. Cream can be a little tricky because different shades go in and out of style (think 1990's IBM PCs color!). White is white, and it's easy to match to appliances and fixtures as they come and go.
- Q: we‘ve moved into a 1930s flat with those old bakelite tiles, i think they‘re caller marley tiles. does anyone know a good way to get paint off them, and how to get them looking shiney and new again.cheers!
- The one thing you do not want to do is use any harsh or abrasive cleanser on them. If they are real bakelite then they can lose their gloss and can be ruined. First try a bit of liquid laundry soap and warm water on a terry washcloth or small towel and dab or blot it on the spots. As the warm water and soap sit on the paint it will soften enough to scrape off with your fingernail or a popsicle stick. Always try any cleaning on a tile that is not seen readily, like under the sink if available, to insure that the finish does not get damaged. I have never known tiles to be made of bakelite but plastic was used extensively up to the 1970's and it can be cleaned with mineral spirits if necessary. If the soap and water do not work try mineral spirits, (also known as paint thinner and/or turpentine) on a small area of the tiles. You can try the fingernail scraping method first and some of the paint may come off straight away if it is latex and not too thick. If you get all the paint off you can shine them with carnuba wax, but try the wax on a hidden tile to make sure it does not have a reaction with bakelite. Best of luck.

- There okorder / it recommends not using floor tile paint in places such as bathrooms where there is moisture. I guess you could paint the floor a week or two before putting it on the market - a case of buyer beware if it all scrapes off 6 months later - but the paint is quite expensive so I wouldn't personally go down this route myself - as it's not a nice thing to happen for the unsuspecting buyers. I'm guessing that currently the floor is more of an eyesore as you haven't integrated this into your current bathroom design? Personally, I would ditch the painting idea and buy a decent off-cut of lino and cover up the old floor tiles since you only have a small area to work with. Lino nowadays comes in many guises/patterns and since it's a small area you can check all local companies for offcuts of perhaps the more expensive pseudo 'wood' type lino etc... You may spend ?50 but it will brighten the room and transform it into a more modern look - and ultimately will help you get your asking price. (You could also tell the buyers that the original green tiles are still underneath and they could reveal them if they wanted to...just don't tell them how ugly they are...the secret is to get them excited about new possibilities in the future!!) - best way to remove the tile would be a heat gun or a propain torch the torch can be dangerous, a good heat gun cost is,nt that much, get youeself a 3to 4 in putty knife and the heat gun and awawy you go , what are you going to replace the old tile whith .???

- let the first slot be filled with a tile covering the whole breadth. then the remaining slots can be filled in f(n-1) ways. again if the first slot be covered in 1ft /3ft way then the remaining slots may be filled in f(n-3) ways. so in my opinion f(n)=f(n-1)+f(n-3)
