- Q:I wish to change the bathroom colour,re-tileing is too expensive so maybe painting the tiles is a option howbest do i prepare for this
- John, I know of no one that has painted over ceramic tile and is satisfied with the results. It's a finish that will not hold up through the constant use of cleaning products. Retiling is honestly the anser. It can be done easily. You'll want to cut through the drywall along the edge of the existing tile aolong the entire perimeter. Remove all the drywall and tile (still adhered to the drywall) in sections. Place cardboard or something that will protect the tub while this process occurs. After that install 1/2' hardi-backer with 1 1/2 screws and install the tile. If you use the 4x4 glazed tile, you can rent a tile cutter for about $15 (or buy one for double that). The tile will cost about $1.40p/sf. Typically you'd need about 70sf of tile (or around $110.00), and 50 pcs of 2x6 cap (about $70) and 2pcs 2x2 corner cap ($4). Grout will run $15. The hardi backer will be $50. Mastic to set tiles will be around $30. An alternative is lay tile over the existing. You will have to remove the existing soap dish to do this.. You save the cost of hardibacker, and some labor. If you do endeavor into this, set the soap dish with the grout, not the mastic. it's a common mistake by DYIers. Use some tape to hold it in place until the grout dries.
- Q:What should you pay attention to when installing tiles?
- Decoration is sure to follow the procedures, the installation of the tiles to the base to do real, the mortar filled, so uniform.
- Q:Is there a way to paint dark green tiles? I also want to paint my white cabinets- what should I be aware of (sanding, etc) Anything else I need to know? Thanks!
- With your tiles if you want to paint them darker then yes you can buy specific tile paint, which involves using a primer first then the paint, but to go lighter i think u may struggle as covering any dark colour and going lighter is tough. As for your cabinets, depends what they are made of, if the r solid wood a light sanding and primer should suffice, if they have laminate fronts(shiny) i wouldn't bother trying to paint them, just buy new fronts, its often as cheap as buying all the paints and primers etc!
- Q:My house has shake roof. We plan to reroof this summer. Please let me know advantages and disadvantages of metal tile vs ceramic lieght weith tiles. Thanks!

- Q:I have really old honeycomb tile in my bathroom and it would be extremely difficult to remove it. The surface is pretty flat .Would ceramic tile work best , or something like self stick vinyl tiles?
- Well there are a few issues to address, first if the existing floor is in good shape, not cracked, no loose tile, level, and solid, that's a good start. next the thing about wax seal on the toilet, don't let that worry you, sometimes people stack the seals, use two seals on on top of the other, in fact extra thick seals are available. If you end up using an additional underlayment and find the flange is too far away , they make extensions that fit into the existing flange. Talk to someone where you looking at tile and ask about a leveling agent. Clean the existing floor with something like TSP (tri-sodium Phosphate) and ask if the leveling agent is OK over porcelain tile, Lots of the tiles used on the octagon floors were porcelain, they will not have a glaze and may appear more of a matte finish unless wet then they are shiny. The only reason to use the leveling agent is if you use vinyl, the pattern underneath will show thru in time. There are some mfg. who make a pure vinyl that is glued down around the perimeter and left alone in the center, so they never copy the pattern below.
- Q:I live in a single-level ranch style house but on a concrete pad. I am re-tiling the kitchen floor. Upon removing the old tile, I discovered a 15 lb. felt pad had been glued to the floor; on top of this pad was thin set; then the tile. I live in Bakersfield, CA which is a dry and arrid climate.
- YIKES!! Even in the High Desert of California, there is moisture underground. But, getting to your question: a) If your pad was poured over a vapor barrier (visqueen, typically), you do not need to add anything new *as a vapor barrier*. b) It cannot hurt to install a sealer on top of the concrete before you install new tile in any case. That will reduce the dusting in any case. c) But I am thinking that the felt paper you found was installed as a strain-relief rather than a vapor-barrier. It allows the tile to move differently than the concrete slab. This becomes important if there are extreme changes in outside temperature - which penetrates the edges of the slab and varies with the time-of-day - with relatively constant temperature inside. If the tile is bonded directly to the concrete as those temperature changes take place it will begin to spall and separate - not good as even a few fractions of an inch of difference will be enough to break the bond between the tile and the concrete. Were it up to me, I would install a strain-relief (AKA underlayment) with the new tile. There are liquid applications (Laticrete) and sheet goods (Durock) which come to mind and are very effective as a bond-breaker yet give a solid, reliable surface to hold the tile. These are only two of many and are linked below.
- Q:i know NOTHING about how to do it or what i need. Could someone just list all the tools and equipment i would need to buy or rent to complete this job myself? ie, tiles, tile cutter, ?, ?, ?... etc. thanks.
- you need a nocthed trail, maybe 1/4 inch. a tile saw you can buy for 90 at home depot, or rent one for the same price. a grout float, a level, a tape measure, a 5 gal bucket ( to clean your tools while you work) That's really about it. any hard ware store should hook you up as well, If you hire a person to lay the tile the going rate is about 5.00 to 6.00 per square foot.
- Q:okay so im a dancer, but i never really bothered to try tap. but since this year the company im on says i have to. I bought my shoes yesterday and i have to practice like crazy in two days because that when i start.:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::MAIN POINT!but i noticed the tile in my house is uneven like some of the corners and the sides come up and and really pointy(and sharp). IS IT BAD TO TAP ON UNEVEN TILE??WILL IT MESS UP MY TAP SHOES?
- itll scrape the metal and with the taps tile is VERY SLIPPERY!!! so beware!!!
- Q:I am looking at replacing my kitchen floor, which currently has carpeting. (Bought the house like that.) And now I am looking to do either vinyl or tile. I understand tile is good for a lifetime, where as vinyl is good for 15-20 years for the heavier kind, but tile is double the cost. We plan on staying in our house a long time, if not forever, but in the case we would decide to sell, would tile or vinyl give us more value?
- Tile will always increase the value of your home. The problem with vinyl is that it is soft, so the chair and table legs will soon leave indentations in the vinyl and they will be permanent. This is also true for the appliances and any heavy furniture. It also chips, tears, and gouges easily. Vinyl can also stain. A tile may crack, but a tile can easily be replaced. There is virtually no upkeep to a tile floor.
- Q:I‘m remodeling my kitchen back splash and bathroom shower and i love the Moroccan tiles. Does anyone know any source for Moroccan tiles in San Francisco, California?
- The okorder / Cheers, and Good luck Anna,
