Q:I have really old honeycomb tile in my bathroom and it would be extremely difficult to remove it. The surface is pretty flat .Would ceramic tile work best , or something like self stick vinyl tiles?: Well there are a few issues to address, first if the existing floor is in good shape, not cracked, no loose tile, level, and solid, that's a good start. next the thing about wax seal on the toilet, don't let that worry you, sometimes people stack the seals, use two seals on on top of the other, in fact extra thick seals are available. If you end up using an additional underlayment and find the flange is too far away , they make extensions that fit into the existing flange. Talk to someone where you looking at tile and ask about a leveling agent. Clean the existing floor with something like TSP (tri-sodium Phosphate) and ask if the leveling agent is OK over porcelain tile, Lots of the tiles used on the octagon floors were porcelain, they will not have a glaze and may appear more of a matte finish unless wet then they are shiny. The only reason to use the leveling agent is if you use vinyl, the pattern underneath will show thru in time. There are some mfg. who make a pure vinyl that is glued down around the perimeter and left alone in the center, so they never copy the pattern below.

Q:I‘d like to recover my kitchen floor with linoleum tiles - mainly because they are relatively inexpensive, I can do it myself and I can do it at my pace (not moving all of my appliances out in a day). Has anyone used them and if so, what do you like/dislike about them?: I think you're talking about Peel and Stick Tiles? If so, I'm not sure I'd use them in your kitchen unless you are an extremely clean person. I used Peel and Stick tiles in a rental house we own. The tenant got so much grease under the tiles by the oven that the tiles came unglued and were sliding around. Spaces of the old floor were showing between the tiles, and the spaces between were filthy. These tiles came up really easily, but the tiles in the rest of the kitchen were extremely hard to remove. It took days of work with a screw driver to peel those off. After I had removed all the tiles, I couldn't get any more Peel and Stick tiles to stick to the floor no matter how much I cleaned it. We finally used Vinyl Sheet flooring. (The stuff that is one large piece of vinyl.) We figured that the vinyl sheet doesn't have to be glued down and there aren't any individual tiles to pull apart from each other. The vinyl sheet flooring is still inexpensive. You can get it at some Big Box stores. It's a little tricky to lay the vinyl. We made a template using pages from a magazine. We taped them together, then moved the template carefully to the vinyl sheet. We then cut the sheet and moved the flooring to the kitchen. This worked, and I think it will survive better than then Peel and Stick tiles did. You would have to move all the appliances out of the kitchen in order to lay this type of flooring, though.

Is there a way to get the grout off ?: First if your unhappy the tile man should be called to do this. But if you feel you can do it yourself there are a couple ways to do it. If it happens to be a raised or relief style deco use a pc of wood. A small dowel sharpened to a dull point can be used to gently dig out the grout. If its a flat deco tile, scrape off excess with a flat pc of wood or plastic. Never use metal since it can leave a permanent mark on tiles. Fine hazes you can start with a dry rag and work up to a white nylon pad scrub with. When doing a rag or nylon pad do this dry, no water. Water helps reintroduce the grout to the tile. Q:I have ten 4x4 ceramic tile that I cannot find new. What is an easy way to clean the backs off so I can re-use them?: With Acid easily available in the market. And I am it is HCL. Thats the only way to bring the original shine of ceramic tile.

Q:do i remove toilet, vinyl tile and sink cabinet. under lay for tile? what holds ceramic tile down?: Yes its best to remove everything but the cement board is 3/8 to 1/2 in. thick and the tile being placed on it is about a 1/4 to 3/8 depending on the amount of thin set used. Can you place a threshold down at the doorway to accommodate for this difference in height? And if the wood below the tile floor is not at least 1 in. thick then the flexing of the floor will always cause cracking of the grout lines if not the tiles them self. These are a couple things people overlook when wanting a tile floor. Good Luck

Q:so i was wanting to lay some ceramic tiles down in a small room. right now in the room i think theres vinyl tiles and they r laid right on top of the pplywood floor. so im just wondering am i able to just lay the ceramic tiles right on top of the plywood floor after i tear up scrape up the old floor? any advice?: Kat and Kevin, It is not absolutely critical to put down material over the plywood before tiling. It's just better to do so. Nowadays, most people use backer board on top of the plywood. This is because backer board doesn't shrink or swell due to changes in moisture content. However, I've seen and done tiling directly over plywood in the past. This is done when customers are on a strict budget. In most homes built with plywood sub floors, tar paper is usually used between the two layers of plywood sub flooring. This acts as a moisture barrier and prevents the bottom layer and floor joists from being exposed to moisture. (I have seen tiling work done directly over plywood and it has lasted, without cracks in the gout, for 20 years). Having said that, it's best to lay down something like backer board. Increasing the height of your floor can be a problem with any addition to the plywood sub floor. Sometimes doors or other items can be affected by the increased height. You can also use different thicknesses of backer board to prevent too much height, while still using the board.

Q:The existing ceramic tiles on the floor run up to the cabinets and appliances. Should I lay the floor first and then the cabinets or the cabinets first?: If I were you, I would replace the cabinets first. That will make the rest of your measuring easier. It would be even better to just plain strip everything out of the kitchen and lay the floor first, then the cabinets and tile. But that is assuming you won't need the kitchen for a few days.

Q:Hey there. We are in the process of adding a half bath to our home. We purchased tiles months ago at a tent sale at out local tile store. We have some wall corners that might require bullnosed corner tiles but this wasnt taken into account when we purchased the tiles and now we cannot find matching bullnose tiles anywhere.......Is there any was to finish the wall edges without using bullnosed tiles and have it still look good???: Bnose tile is a new simplified way of doing tile and was to remove one of the grout edges. So all you have to do is grout the top like they did in the old days a few years ago. You could also use a thin lat of flat trim, a brass or stainless steel edging, or caulking that matches the wall or tile. I think the simple grout is your best bet. PS. Where corners meet If the tile is same color through they can show. If it is glazed colored or just a thin color on top then no. In that case cut the tile back so that they do not quite reach the corner. Then there will be a slight inverted corner where you will grout or caulk. In neither case would you want to miter the corner. It will be too sharp and thin corners would be weak enough to chip.
