- At your local home improvement store they have a sealant that will bring shine to cement tiles. They have to be cleaned real good and then you put this over the tiles. Just ask an associate, and they will point you in the right direction. :-)

- My very strong opinion on this matter is to go to Lowe's or HD during a weekday morning, when they're not too busy. Get a handy-dandy little book so you have it with you as you go. Ask the cute lil helper at the store to help you with all you will need. Yes, you will need to seal the grout - they can find the best sealer, the best grout, the whole nine yards. - You do want to lay it directly on the slab. And treat the slab accordingly depending on the shape of the slab. Cracks need to be treated ( several ways to do this) and any dips or highs dealt with ( if any). The basic work is easy its the hauling of the tile and the thin set bags thats the hardest. - Q: It is in my kitchen , hall and bath. Is the reason that tiling is so expensive becasue of having to remove the old tile first?
- If the tile was laid properly, it can be time consuming. Yes, part of the cost of laying tile is in removing the old tile floor first. Never tile over tile. That's asking for trouble, plus it raises the floor height. I'd recommend getting a heavy steel mallet or hammer and renting an electric tile jack hammer. It plugs in and has a flat blade attachment that hammers away under the tile to lift it. While it may cost you money, it will save you time and muscle fatigue. Use the hammer to crack the tile before you use the electric tile hammer. It will go a lot faster.
- Q: My marble counter top is made of tiles. We bought the house and the previous owners installed them. my problem is that the grouts between are chipped and stained. how can i repair them to look new again?
- Tile stores sell a tool to remove old grout. Only a few dollars. You can remove and regrout, not a difficult job. You can buy stain proof grout that is pre-mixed. Follow instructions on the label. You will love the results.

- Yes Rob...I would suggest you pull up a piece of tile. If the tile has thinset on it, Then there is no bond to the substrait (the floor/plywood, cementitious backerboard or dry packed mortar). If there is no thinset on the tile, Then the thinset may have set-up before the the tile was put down. Stand where the tile is coming up and roll up on to your toes, with some force! bang down with the heals of your feet. If you feel the floor move/bounce, Then the substrait is faulty. In any event the floor must be taken up. TCNA (Tile Council of North America) Suggests a 19/32 tongue and groove plywood subfloor over joists 16 on center and a underlayment plywood floor of 19/32 with an 1/8 cap between sheets. I know its a lot to take in but if you have another installer redo the floor you should get the TCNA handbook and make sure its done right. It only costs about $9.00 Look up TCNA on line. Also make sure the installer uses a super modified thinset!
