Q: do i remove toilet, vinyl tile and sink cabinet. under lay for tile? what holds ceramic tile down?: you really should pull the vinyl up, even if it's a hassle, because it could buckle in the future and affect your tile work. Go to your home store and see if they have a solvent that will loosen the adhesive holding the vinyl down, then scrape it all up. Hopefully it will be concrete underneath and not another layer of vinyl (happened to us in a kitchen once). Clean it really well, then do your tiling. Be sure to use the correct adhesives and grouts. There is also a sealer you can use that will insure the grout never stains, something *she* will appreciate when she never has to get on the floor with a toothbrush to clean out the muck between the tiles. :) Good luck and happy holidays!

Q: i have the material that is needed to tile my home but cannot pay for it to be done so i need information on how to do this: Go to u-tube and type in tile. Plenty of DIY vids..!

Q: We are going to replace the bathtub that came with our house, built in 1986, but we can not decide whether or not to just get a regular bath combination shower or just the bathtub and tile the shower walls...any suggestions or experience with this that anyone would be able to recommend either way?: What type of flooring is in the room? Do you have another shower? I really like look of tile, but not cleaning it. I would recommend using a medium/dark grout.

Q: Do you fill up the grout all the way to the top or only upto inner edge? We filled it up to the inner edge, but now the grout and the tile edges are starting to collect dirt very easily and it is very hard to clean. We are thinking of regrouting all the way to the top so that it will be easier to clean. Is that the correct way to grout these tiles?: Most all tiles ( there are exceptions) are always grouted flush to avoid a couple of things. One is the problem your having now and the other is to protect the edging of the tile.depending on just how much more you have to fill in, you make have to dig some grout out to get a proper bond.. Q: I‘m going to be putting in a tile floor in my kitchen (all cabinets and appliances removed). I have done my research and have a good idea of what I will be doing - beef up the subfloor with plywood and lots of screws for rigidity; use cement based self leveler to correct a mild slope; install backerboard or decoupling membrane (not sure which yet) followed by the tile.I have a plan, but plans tend to fall apart after their first run-in with reality. Has anyone run into types of problems they don‘t talk about on DIY network? The types of problems complete the following kinds of sentences: are you f***ing kidding me? You have to do ____ before ___? or dammit, why don‘t they tell you you need [insert name of specialized gadget] on a product that cures in 10 minutes? or boy was I an idiot for doing/not doing [insert critically important but not obvious tiling procedure here].?Much obliged, and thanks for the responses.: Just a couple...ideas make sure you use specialized backerboard screws and not drywall screws buy a medium tile saw...at the beginning you will be quite a newbie..and slower than a pro at making your cuts and you don't want to be under the rental by the hour gun... when you are done..you will feel like a champ and sell the saw on craigslist for about the same money, to another newbie like you..he will thank you!! buy the best mortar money can buy..high end laticrete..you will be happy you did..rookies tend to cheap out on materials..but good thin set has many advantages, like flexibility, pot time etc...adhesion... last but not least porcelain tile and not ceramic.

Q: I want to know if it‘s necessary to use any special underlayment, or any additional steps required to successfully lay ceramic tile over a wood plank floor. Thanks!: Yes you can, if in good condition. If you have hardwood over planks, then it won't move anymore than having cement board over planks will. 1.5 inches of wood in excellent condition doesn't have enough bounce to bother tile. Cement board is overkill in most jobs. And not that great of one in the first place. On the flip side, If it is not an overkill, then it probably isn't enough. Any tile that goes over the seams of the cement board, is at high risk for cracking. Tile in the center of cement board is very safe. Mine you if the joists aren't strong enough, it won't matter what the sub floor is or how many layers of cement board you have, you can't do tile. If the floor moves a 1/16th of an inch when 300 pounds is set in one spot, then you have to reinforce or replace the joists, nothing else will fix it. This is how most plank floors fail. Old floors often are built with 2x6 lumber spanning 10 feet. And then there is the new technology: Tile membranes. Cement board harden the floor so it doesn't move. Tile membranes create a floating layer for the tile to sit on. As long as the floor doesn't move more than an 1/8 at the extreme, the tile won't crack on top of a tile membrane. Tile membranes cost about 1.00 to 1.80 US dollars a square foot. The basic membrane is 1/8 of an inch thick. Due to price most tile installers have rarely or never used it, so be prepared to see skeptics. common membrane brands: Schluter?-DITRA is the favorite of TV shows like Holmes on Homes and is sold at home depot among other places. If it helps you to see it, grab a piece of graph paper. Each sqare represents one till. Mark of 18 tiles in one direction and 15 in the other. Complete the rectangle. Then, shade in the other 2 food wide border. That two tiles in each direction around the outside. Shade the other border. Those are your green tiles. What's the length and width of the inner (white tiles)? Find the area of the whole floor: 18 ft x 15 ft. = 270 tiles Find the area of the white part (unshaded center tiles). (18-2(2))(15-2(2)) = 116 tiles The area of the green part is the area of whole floor - area of white part o= area green part. Since the tiles are 1ft^2 the number of tiles is the same as the area in feet.

Q: I have several boxes of wall tile and I would like to use some on a floor. Is this okay? What is the difference?: Don't do this under any circumstances. Wall tiles are much thinner and are designed for wall use only. When a floor tile is designed they are much thicker and have also been stressed to take a weight. As other contributors have said wall tiles generally have a smooth finish and are therefore slippy whereas wall tiles will always have some form of anti-slip format. I don't know where you got your wall tiles but most shops will be happy to take them back and exchange them for other products such as floor tiles.
