- Q: Been renting rooms for years, and now I'm finally ready to get my own little place. I'm trying to save space and money basically. I'd like for there to be a comfortable place for people to sit when they visit. - Bring it to my husband. LOL He does this type of work. It is a lot of work. If you've never done it before, I don't recommend attempting it.But you would need the material to start with, A staple gunw/staples, a good sewing machine, you may need to buy new foam if the old is no good also stuffing, it's like a cotton batting, I think that's the word I'm looking for. I think that's about it. Oh and a good pair of sharp scissors. They should have a guide at the fabric store as to how much fabric you need. Good Luck if you attempt it. It is a lot of work. It takes my husband about 2 days to do a sofa if he works staight through. That's like from 8 in the morning to maybe 9-10 at night.

It will need a solvent to remove the marker and this will also remove the finish and pigment from your sofa (if it is a pigmented suite) which will then need replacing. This is best left to the experts. Call a trained leather technician to do the work. If it is an aniline style leather then the mark will be permanent and only time will help as it will dissipate and blend in slowly. Baby wipes will damage your leather so please do not try this. Hairspray sometimes works on pigmented leather but can also make matters much worse.

- During my college years I had two futons in my living room and on occasion I slept on them. If you are average weight to less than average weight then a few nights will be fine. Long term - not so much. As an adult my couch is a queen sleeper sofa with the extra comfort mattress that you use an air pump to inflate and it is much better. Bottom line is how much you are willing to spend versus how much actual use it will get.

- Go to the library a check a book out on upholstery. I have one but it would take me forever to type out the instructions. You will need a staple gun and lots of staples and a sewing machine. I reupholstered a sectional sofa with 2 recliners at both ends. I used a heavy duty drapery fabric. It turned out great! I have since given it away and down sized to a love seat and large chair with ottoman.

- I use Sticky Paws strips for the ends of my sofas. You get a lot in a $10 packet from the pet store and just have to leave them on for a few months till the cat starts using his post. If your cat is catnip reactive (mine are not particularly) you can put that on a post. Cats love the sisal rope to scratch on too so a post should have some of that at the bottom. The inexpensive cardboard sratchers that lie on the floor are good too. Some cats are up-scratchers, some are down-scratchers and some like a little bit of both. Make the post a fun thing (trees are best as they sort of become a home for the cats who love to be up high) Play with him around it with a cat dancer or feather toy. When he uses the post for his scratching be sure to praise him LAVISHLY. Say all manner of silly things like You are such a great cat! What a wonderful kitty you are, That's my darling boy being SO good! Lay it on with a trowel! He will react positively to this praise and the fun he has playing around it.
