- With no offense meant to answer 1, Tape NEED NOT be applied to concrete backer board; for the purpose of tiling over. Thin set can be skimmed into the seams and screw holes. Certainly the board should be flush at it's face with any adjacent. If the house is wood frame; I suppose one might think that at some point it might shift; but we hope, not in our lifetime. - If you mean instead of tile, remember that unless you plan to paint it - concrete or cement is not waterproof. Think of a concrete pool - it requires periodic painting (maintenance). There are a lot of thin solid surface products out there if you do not want to look of tile. Tiling is not that hard as long as you prepare properly and take your time. There are alot of site with tiling guidelines out there - the important thing is to install/prepare the surface properly and seal the grout when you are done.

- Q: I'm preparing to replace the tiles in my foyer. It's a townhouse, about 20 years old with no basement. I don't know much in the way of construction, but since it's on ground level I think there might just be a cement slab underneath the existing tile. Can I install the tiles directly over the cement slab after removing the old tile or do I need a backer board? And if I do, how do I account for the height difference? Thanks in advance!
- if its backer board, u can cut it with a razor knife, if its Dur-rock( cement board) wet the area of the board first after marking the line with a pencil, and then cut , will cut down on the dust. hint: get a box or floor fan and point it so as to blow the dust away from u! lic. gen. contractor
- Q: Bought new ceramic tile for kitchen and the old stuff is hard to get up. I want to keep the cement board that is in there for the new stuff.
- It's next to impossible to remove Ceramic with out damaging the cement board. Esp. if the tile was installed properly to begin with. Tile is installed with a thin-set type mortar when using a Cement backer. If installed over plywood they would have used a ceramic Mastic [glue] That can be removed much easier. You can however lay the new tile over the old, but this will raise the level of the floor, not a good idea when in the Kitchen.

- No.Do not put any mortar under the board.And do not tape the joints just use straight mortar.I suggest Quick set or commonly known as hot mud.Then use liquid nail to put tile down.then use a mixture of silicone and spray paint [any color] and mix well before applying.Apply with a paint brush and then sponge off every couple of minutes so that none dries on the tile.
- Q: Ok, here's the situation:I have a covered porch on our house, and I need to replace its floor. Facts of concern: * It is a covered porch. There are four columns between the floor and roof, but I don't know whether they are actually supporting the roof. * It is currently floored with 1/2 plywood, which is rotting. - With your situation of having a room below your choices are very limited. First I would replace the rotted plywood with 5/8 pressure treated tounge and groove. You can cut to within a 1-1/2 of your exterior walls with a skill saw, I wouldn't worry to much about what is under the walls. Replace plywood and then top with 1/4 tile backer board and tile it. Complete your project by sealing your joints. If you need a jack, use the jack for your car, there usually rated for 20000 lbs
