Q:or in queensland
Depends on whether you are employed or working contract. Currently it could be 18-25 per hr for employee or upto 40 per hr for contract depending on allowances and if you are providing your own vehicle or company vehicle. Then are you doing bats or anticon, it is usually charged on a sqm rate. Call some roofing companies or insulation companies and ask them what their rates are.
Q:I am purchasing a mobile home with a shingled roof. The shingles need to be replaced (>15yrs old) and with the cost of heating going up each day I thought I would added some of that 2" thick rigid insulation. I would place this right on top of the existing roof and then place the firring strips for the metal roof right on top of the rigid insulation panels (which are 4x8'). By using 3" galvanized sheet rock screws I will get a good solid attachment. Then I will put the metal roofing on to the firring strips as normal. Does anyone see any downside to doing this? Has anyone tried this before?
I agree with the soundness of every part of your plan EXCEPT not removing the original shingle roof. The shingle roof is already at the end of its usable life. There’s no benefit to covering up old problems, and they will most likely affect the durability of the new roof. Plus, removing the old roof gives you the opportunity to inspect and repair any issues with the roofing deck. Your new insulation and metal roof will attach better and perform better by removing the old shingle roof.
Q:p/t deck on a commercial rubber roof do we need closed cell insulation under deck to protect rubber?
First I would put some walk pads down, I don't know if you can purchase them at your local home center. There should be a specialty store that sells vinyl siding they should have them they are about two foot by two foot rubber squares that have dots on them they look like suction cups. Place these pads dots down so that water will drain under the pads, then place a piece of 2" x 8" about 16" long of p/t blocking on top, this will help transfer the load of the deck on the rubber walk pad on the rubber roof. Place the pads and blocks where ever you place your 4" x 4" s You are now ready to start framing the deck. GOOD LUCK!!!
Q:1) What thickness of rigid insulation is used on flat roofs?
I've seen as little as 2" and as much as 8".
Q:I am building a porch roof over an existing patio. The rafters are fabricated I-beams. I plan on putting aluminum soffit under the I-beams. On top of the roof I would like to put down a metal roof. I already put down 3/4" OSB and a rain/ice barrier. Do I need insulation and/or ventilation on top of the rain and ice barrier, or can I get away without it?
the ribs in the metal roof will ventilate it - insulation is only necessary if you plan to heat it
Q:Have a patio with metal roof, gets very hot during summer. Will Great Stuff insulate and stick to hot roof during summer? Thanks
I don't think Great Stuff foam insulation is meant to be applied in the manner in which you need. It is used to fill gaps and cracks, not be sprayed out in thin coats. whenever I've used it in the past, I found out it did not like to be spread out, or "worked".
Q:hot because of all the added insulation. Is that what the insulation will do? Someone told me that it will save us on our cooling/heating bills, and that it will be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer now. Is this true?
Insulation stops heat from being transferred across it. Therefore, if it's cold outside and warm inside, it will stay warm inside because the heat can't get out. Likewise, if it's hot outside and cool inside, the heat can't get in so it stays cool inside. The exact same principles are used in vacuum flasks that keep coffee or soup hot. If you put cold drinks in there, they will stay cold instead, even on a hot day. The principle used in both cases is to stop heat from being able to travel to or from the inside to the outside. In a vacuum flask, they achieve this by using a double walled flask and sucking out all the air (leaving a vacuum). In a house however, it's not practical to do this (except for windows which is how double glazing works) so they use some sort of substance that traps large amounts of air in it (like fibreglass or polyester batts) to achieve the same effect. Hope this helps. TV
Q:should thermal insulation ever be applied directly to the underside of a roof top?
Should it be done, No. Thermal Insulation is put direftly above the ceiling. Not on the actually roof top. The reason being, that even though both methods will trap in heat, With the insulation on the arches of the roof, it still allowing heat into the Attic, Or roof space. This means that the top of the roof will infact be the warmest part of the house, and lot of heat will be lost. from the main rooms of the house.
Q:Why would you not insulate between the rafters in an attic? I see a lot of houses with no insulation on the inside of the roof.
as long as the attic floor is insulated that is all you need. The insulation will keep the area below it warm. If you insulate the rafters then the attic stays even warmer while the area below not so much.
Q:Without loft insulation ,the roof space is full of air.Why does this not keep the heat in?
The warm air that collects in the attic is in close contact with the roof, heat is conducted through the roof and lost to the atmosphere.
