- Q:I have a 120 year old house w/ a flat roof, no attic and no insulation. I have a dropped ceiling on the top floor - drop is about 5". Ceiling tiles are not insulated. I plan on getting insulation and having it rest on top of the ceiling tiles.I live in Pittsburgh, PA where we get hot summers and cold winters. What would be a better insulation - traditional fiberglass or radiant? Radiant appeals to me since installation is easier, but if it won't be as effective, I won't do it. Thanks!
- I would get the lightest by weight. Make sure your structure that holds the tiles can carry the extra weight of the insulation with out warping or bending!
- Q:We just had our first child, and his room is right above the garage. It is noticebly colder in his room, especially the floor. I used the plastic window kits and that helped, however, the floor is still extremely cold and I would like to at least check the insulation in the garage ceiling. - This project can be easily completed by someone with little to no experience. Since you believe the insulation is 50+ years old, your best coarse of action is to tear out the drywall and existing insulation and replace with new R-30 insulation. Fiberglass insulation starts to degrade after 50 yrs. R values vary on your location and climate, but a in general an R-30 batts would work for this application.

- The numbers associated with it are called R Value. As a rule of thumb, the higher R Value numbers, the better. For example, fiberglass has about R 3 per inch (least expensive) and rigid foam has about an R 6 per inch (most expensive). If you have plenty of space to work with, you could do 10 inches of fiberglass (or a similar mineral fiber type insulation) and get the same results as if you used 5 inches of foam. It just depends on your situation. If you are in a very cold climate, I would suggest insulating to an R 49. If you are in a very hot climate, I would suggest insulating to an R 19 with a radiant barrier (more efficient than R 30 in warm, sunny climates). If you are in a moderate climate, you could be anywhere in the middle.

- one thing you didnt mention is why you want to insulate a basement ceiling. i can understand if its for sound abaitment but insulating a basement ceiling isnt really necessary (unless ofcourse its required by local code). in answer to your question, you tuck the insulation around wires and piple by pulling the insulation apart. compressing the insulation against wires and pipes compromises its effectiveness. heres what i would do. instead of fiber glass insulation use what is called sound board (it has thermal qualitys as well) and then sheet rock over that. sound board (it used to be call celetex back in the day) is available at home depot and most lumber yards.

- We re trying to install a ceiling mounted storage unit into our condo s garage and could also not find the ceiling joists. We called out builder and he said since it s a condo with living space above the garage there are three layers of Sheetrock for fire proofing, so we would need to use 3 nails and hit them up into the ceiling until we find a joist. A stud finder will not work in this instance. Suffice it to say we gave up on that project. :-(
