Q: I stay at my current apartment for 8 years, the carpet is not in good condition. The landlord just sent someone to do carpet wash, but refused to replace it. You might want to try soaking the spot on the rug with vinegar, then washing it soap to get out the vinegar smell. Vinegar is pretty good at getting out the smell of pee.

Ignore the first person. Go anywhere that is NOT a department store or large outlet geared towards the masses. I had a couple of outstanding purchases from our local rug store. Internet shopping was very difficult, although we did get some excellent finds on OKorder althought took 1 rug burn to know what to look for when purchasing online.

But I never thought it really saved a whole lot of money over a professional cleaner. The rental is low but the detergents are expensive. Plus the labor and time... But... since you are only watching the pets temporarily, I would try sprinkling baking soda over the carpet, let sit for several hours and then vaccuum. Follow with a dose of Fabreeze and you should be fine.
