- Q: Want to construct a patio cover approx. 20 feet long. Only want to use a 6x6 or 8x8 post at each end. What size steel i-beam would I have to use to carry the load???
- consult your local building for the area design loads including, live dead and wind.many local steel supp;iers can design it for you.
- Q: Just wondering how good are forge steel screw drivers, tool boxes(organisers) and pliers are, as screw fix are having a january sale, and looking to add to my tool collection. Thanks in advance
- forged steel is a trick to get people like you who know nothing of steel to think of a blacksmith hammering away at a anvil making great tools. Not to say they are bad they are probably fine. but forged just means it was made when the steel was hot, it says nothing of the quality of steel in the process. however whenever steel is forged it will be stronger than the same product made out the same steel, but shaped by machining process.
- Q: All the steel straps that secure my deck and stair 6x6 posts to the concrete piers have some rust on them. Had bought a rust reducer to spray on them and repaint. As I went to do this I found that one of them is on its last legs, with the steel rusted through and bubbling up all up the sides of the straps. Since this is the end post on a row of 3 deck support posts, I was thinking of removing as much rust as possible, then paint with Rustoleum and cover lower post with something to keep water away from post and pier in the future? Was thinking of something removeable so I could check on it for further rusting. What do you folks with building experience think of this? Thanks.
- Sorry troll, doctors don't give a tetanus shot just because you came into contact with rusty metal. The belief that you need a tetanus shot for stepping on a rusty nail is not quite accurate -- it's not the rust that prompts the shot, it's the fact that the nail was on the ground and dirty.
- Q: What is the size range of steel coils?
- The size of steel coils can vary depending on the specific application and industry, offering a wide range of options. Steel coils are available in various sizes to meet different needs. The width of steel coils can range from a few inches to several feet, accommodating different requirements. Similarly, the thickness of steel coils can vary from very thin gauges, like 0.005 inches, to thicker gauges that exceed 0.5 inches. The length of steel coils is typically determined by the manufacturing process, but it can be customized to meet specific demands. In general, the size range of steel coils is extensive, providing flexibility and adaptability in industries like automotive, construction, and manufacturing.
- Q: i want to know if i should buy a set of acrylic tapers or steel. they r close in cost so it's not a money factor i want to know which work better and if there is a downside to either. thanks!
- Steel is better. Acrylic is porous so isn't as suitable for piercing jewellery as steel. Steel can also slide through easier for some people, acrylic isn't quite as smooth. For tapers it doesn't make a huge deal of difference as they're only passing through your ear briefly, not being worn as jewellery, but if they're close in cost anyway then go for the steel. And the plugs you insert after putting the taper through should always be steel, titanium or glass until your stretch has healed.
- Q: How are steel coils used in the production of storage systems?
- Steel coils are used in the production of storage systems as they are rolled into sheets and then formed into various components such as shelves, frames, and brackets. These components are then assembled to create sturdy and durable storage systems that can hold and organize various items efficiently.
- Q: Is there alloys in low carbon steel or non
- Steel is an alloy. An alloy is a mixture of metals melted together, a solid solution. There are many recipes for steel depending on what the use is. Steel is an alloy of iron and another metal .Low carbon steel has less than 0.3% carbon, carbon steel is 0.3 to 0.6% carbon Low carbon steels generally contain less than 0.25% carbon and cannot be strengthened by heat-treating (strengthening can only be accomplished through cold working). The low carbon material is relatively soft and weak, but has outstanding ductility and toughness. In addition, it is machineable, weld-able, and is relatively inexpensive to produce. Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel, is steel where the main alloying constituent is carbon. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) defines carbon steel as: Steel is considered to be carbon steel when no minimum content is specified or required for chromium, cobalt, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium or zirconium, or any other element to be added to obtain a desired alloying effect; when the specified minimum for copper does not exceed 0.40 percent; or when the maximum content specified for any of the following elements does not exceed the percentages noted: manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, copper 0.60.
- Q: How are steel coils protected from humidity?
- Steel coils are typically protected from humidity through a process called galvanization, where a layer of zinc or another protective coating is applied to the surface of the steel. This coating acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from coming into direct contact with the steel and minimizing the risk of corrosion. Additionally, steel coils are often stored in dry, enclosed spaces or wrapped with moisture-resistant materials such as plastic or wax paper to further protect them from humidity.
- Q: Hey Guys, I'm planning on purchasing a bmx bike and I have been recommended by many people the Kink Launch 2012. I'm thinking of getting it but the frame is made from High Tensile steel and I know the chromoly is stronger and more expensive, but I plan to use my bmx just to chill, ride with friends and some times go through dirt trails at my park, I would like to know, how strong Hi Tensile steel is and can it handle jumps not massive jumps but like jumps where you get like 3 feet high (1m) just for fun, I might go to the skate park but I'm not gonna do tail whips and massive jumps, I just want it as a mobile piece of transportation. I don't want to buy a mtb because I already had 3 of them and they are not practical to take with you on holidays. So, do you think the Kink Launch 2012 is good enough or should I cough up an extra $80 and get the gap ($500 AU)? As I said I ain't gonna do huge jumps.
- High tensile steel could mean almost anything. SAE 4130 Chrome-Moly steel is the de-facto standard for steel bikes frames. High tensile steel could actually mean the same thing since chrome-moly is classified as high strength steel. The strength of the frame depends as much on the quality of the welds and on the size/thickness of the tubing as much as anything else. I'd say what kind of steel you use makes only a minor difference. One reason you want to buy bikes from reputable name-brand companies is they tend to have strict quality controls, this is particularly important when it comes to welds. Welds are always the weakest part of any bike frame, don't let anyone tell you different. 99% of the time if something in the frame breaks, it'll be at the welds. hope this helps.
- Q: What are the different types of corrosion protection for steel coils?
- There are several types of corrosion protection for steel coils, including hot-dip galvanizing, electro-galvanizing, paint coatings, and organic coatings. Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing the steel coil in a bath of molten zinc, creating a protective layer on the surface. Electro-galvanizing is a similar process, but uses an electric current to deposit a layer of zinc onto the steel. Paint coatings provide a barrier between the steel and the environment, preventing corrosion. Organic coatings, such as epoxy or polyurethane, also provide a protective layer and can be applied by various methods such as spraying or dipping.
