Q: I work the Copper plating line at a custom plating facility in MI.I like to use jumper cables with the jumper cable clamps to help confirm electric current is getting to my parts that I am plating. The acids in the Acid copper is constantly eating the steel and copper clamps. WIll I get a good enough current through stainless steel clamps? I use stainless steel hooks, but our maintenance man thinks that is one of the reasons why I have prblems with my parts turning out. I still think it has to do with the clamps getting eatin up. My question is Is stainless steel as good or reliable enough to run an electrical current to my parts if I am using stainless steel or is it best to use another method to try and get a better connection.Please state your sources or experience with working with electricity. I need to get honest answers and not this is my opinion. We are talking about my making a living so this is important to me so I can bring food home to my table. Thanks for all the help.

Q: I have a new stainless steel trash compactor under a butcher block counter. We refinished the countertop, but unfortunately the person who did it wasn't careful with the orbital sander and sanded the top edge of the stainless steel compactor door, ruining the finish. The sander marks are not deep - just surface scratches - but they are unsightly. Is there any way to restore the finish to the stainless steel without having to buy a new door?

Ok, lets define what is Damascus steel. The modern Damascus is basically any steel that shows a pattern. Patterns are accomplished by 1. manipulating the crystal structure or 2. by combining 2 or more different alloys together. The blade you are looking at is referred to as a pattern welded blade. Damascus is only as strong as it's base components + heat treat and design. The strongest will be obtained by combining high carbon and low carbon steels. I do this by using steel cable. The patterns aren't real bold but are interesting none the less. To break it you must brake the hard steel and tear through the soft iron. The laminated stuff works the same way. For greater edge holding I use all high carbon, varying alloy content from simple carbon to chromium/nickle alloys. These are what you normally find in pattern welded blades. A fine pattern that has many lamination's crossing the edge will offer the best edge holding. Properly done one can get the DCE or damascus cutting effect where the soft layers wear away faster than the hard layers almost making the blade self sharpening. Is that blade good? Buy it if you like it, it won't compare to a well made hand forged blade but is much cheaper. sorry for the overload.

The single most important important advance in steel production was learning to accurately control carbon content. We have an aluminum trailer over a steel frame. We used to have a steel trailer. There are two differences I see are the weight and how quickly they deteriorate. I personally prefer the aluminum over the steel, the upkeep is easier and they don't weigh as much which equates to fuel savings. Also if you have a lighter truck an aluminum trailer makes the wear and tear a little easier. You can also look at the size of the truck you are going to tow the trailer with, and the size of the horses inside. All together you definately don't want to exceed the weight limits of the truck. Contrary to what we are usually told, Ti weight to strength ratio is better only for lower strength alloys. Steels match or best Ti and Al alloy ratio's for high strengths. Hard to answer this question, due to varying effects of cold work, alloying, and heat treatments. In general, traditional mild steels with little cold work are about equivalent strength to commercially pure Ti. Cleverly selected mild steels with extensive cold work have greater UTS (and really greater SMYS) than commercially pure Ti, and approach strength of the best Ti alloys. Ti starts at about 60ksi UTS for commercially pure, and goes up to about 200ksi for high strength alloys. Mild steel has varying definitions. Plain carbon steels use virtually no alloying materials other than carbon. Low carbon steels starting in the 1008 (0.08% carbon) range can be cold worked to 100ksi UTS, while 1030, the maximum carbon for mild steel per one source, can be cold worked up to about 180ksi. Simple steels can go about 215 ksi UTS at fairly reasonable cost with lesser cold work than I was using because producers can't make stronger steels with higher degrees of cold work. High strength alloys can best 350ksi at impressively high cost. (and they match best titanium alloy strength to weight ratio). They are why wide body aircraft have lots of steel - landing gears, flap mechanisms, etc. Don't know about cold working Ti though. It doesn't seem to be done much, but difficult to find info.
