- Q: I am installing tile in a bathroom, hall, dinining room, and kitchen, and they all connect. Where should I center the tiles?
- I normally break the areas up and snap chalk lines as if I was going to do each one seperately. Then start adjusting to find the best method of combining them(I have numerous chalk lines of different colors). Then I get real good tiling guys to make me look good. Good Luck
- Q: Can u burn tiles?
- You can but it produces a smelly black smoke so you might check with your local fire dept for local laws and possible burn bans.
- Q: I heard that ceramic tiles absorb water and we have ceramic tile in the downstairs bedroom. After I wash the tile floor how long do I wait until I can move our dressers and furniture back on the tile? Because once I bring in the dressers I don‘t think the tiles will have a chance to dry because it is fully covered by the dressers, right?
- it depends on the ventilation in the room tiles will dry quickly because they do NOT absorb water

- Q: Have you used the marble tiles, the quality, the price?
- Specifically, the selection of floor tiles can start from the following aspects: 1. To see whether the color of the tile body is pure. Mainly observe the back of the tile color is uniform, consistent. 2. To observe the tile cross section of the particles are delicate. Here the cross section does not refer to the tile around the cutting surface, but refers to the broken tile tile. In general, the fracture at the fine, hard and brittle, the same color for the top grade. Because the fine grain tiles waterproof ability, and the larger particles of the tile, the water is easy to immerse, affecting the quality. 3. Pay attention to the thickness of the glaze layer. Glaze thickness is the thickness of the glazed cross section. Glaze is the most expensive material in the tile cost, the thicker the glaze, the better the quality. 4. Listen. Tapping the tiles to pay attention to hear the sound is crisp, such as the sound clear, sweet for the top grade, such as the sound boring for the defective.
- Q: how many tiles will it take
- Hi, Are you sure it's 102 ft? That's more like a dining hall for a small army, rather than a kitchen. Maybe you intended 10 ft and 2 in by 18 ft. Anyway, the normal way to tile a room is to put down two chalk lines that cross in the center of the room and bisect each side of the room. One then starts laying tiles from the center of the room and works toward the sides and ends. If you mean that your tiles are 28 in by 28 in, then the required number of tiles for a 10' 2 x 18 ft room would be Approximately as follows: 6 tiles along long dimension would leave 2 feet at each end, and 4 tiles along the short dimension, assuming it is 10' 2, would leave 10 inches on each side. Dovering the center section would require 24 tiles Covering the uncovered part along the edges would depend to some extent on whether you have a matching pattern. To conver the ends you would need a at least 8 tiles. To cover the sides you could probably cut the tiles and use part of one tile for one side and the other part for the other side. (That depends to some extent on borders and how particular you are about matching.) So, if you cut the tiles, you would need either 6 tiles or possibly 7. So, in summary we have this: 24 .....tiles for the center section 8........ tiles for the ends 7........tiles for the sides. ------------------------ 39......tiles total. REMEMBER, in all of this I assumed that your dimension was not 102 ft, but 10ft and 2 in. You might possible get by with 38, depending if there is no pattern and no borders to worry about. Hope this is not too confusing. FE
- Q: We are redecorating our bathroom. We are on a very limited budget. We can‘t afford to rip out the old tiles and put in new, so we‘re wondering if there is something we can do to make them look new and/or different. Such as painting them? That was my idea, but not sure that tiles can be painted? Can they? And if so how? What exact steps do we need to do to paint the tiles? Or any other ideas on making them look better? Thanks in advance.
- Great information about all kinds of home-improvement projects.
- Q: after grouting a new tile floor (about 400 sq ft) and several moppings the finish is still somewhat dull. how do i clean the tile to bring back a nice glossy finish? Thanks
- Rise out a sponge, wipe it gently across the surface with one smooth stroke. Flip the sponge over and use the other side for the next stroke. Then rinse the sponge off again and repeat the process until you’ve wiped down the whole area. Resist the temptation to rinse the sponge less often.
- Q: hello, this is my first tile and grout job, tiling is done now for grout. bought premixed grout, rubber float, sponge, started grouting last night, put grout on the float and applied to the tile. pushed it into the space between tiles, but it seems like alot fell off in the tub (its in the spaces between tiles) but is this normal for the grout to fall off the wall (i guess it would be considered excess?) but is that normal no sure how applying grout is suppose to look? i know i need to let it sit for 24hrs then do clean up then seal it when done. plz let me know if that grout falling in tub is normal or am i doing something wrong? ( grout is in the grout line though) just looks like alot is falling, or am i useing to much at one time? don‘t know? thx again for any info. mike
- it is practically unavoidable not to make a mess when grouting tile on vertical walls (unless you are a pro). . .but, just like anything else, the more you do it, the more efficient you become. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as your joints are completely full. One concern would be the 24 hour wait period to clean up. . . After you fill your joints with grout it helps to hold your float at almost a 90 degree angle to wipe off the excess grout on the tile. The more you can wipe off, the easier it will be to clean. I usually start sponging with clean water after about 10-15 minutes after the joints are filled (depending on joint width). Fill a 5 gallon bucket with clean water and continue sponging the excess grout off the tile and cleaning your sponge as you do it. Once you are satisfied with how clean the tile is, let it set for another 30-45 minutes. There will be a light grout film or haze on the tile. Take a cheesecloth or the inside of a sock and wipe off the haze. . .wait a day or two then seal it. But, I certainly wouldn't wait 24 hours to clean the tile, it may be too late.
- Q: we‘re moving into a new home that has hot pink ceremic tile as the kitchen counter top and back splash. Can we paint over the tile or do we need to remove the tile and start over with a new counter top.
- You don't want to paint over them, what you need is to have them refinished or reglazed. this will cost about 30% of tile installation and would be the most economical in the long run. Refinishing the tiles would allow them to last 15-20 years with proper maintenance. Search your area for a tile refinisher/reglazer. Refinishing takes a manner of hours and they should be done in about 4 hours or so. You will be able to use the counters in 24 hours. It really is the only way to go, don't bother reinstalling tile, just have it glazed a color you are happy with! The contractor will be able to match any color you want, so this would be the best deal for your kitchen on a limited budget.
