- Q: I just mortared some very porous tiles down and i‘m ready to grout. I‘ve used these tiles before and noticed it‘s pretty tough to get the haze to go away. Should i pre-seal the tile before grouting? if so, what brand or name? Also, do i still use a grout haze remover if needed? And lastly what is your recommended tile sealer to finish the job?
- Yes, yes, yes! Porous tile, natural stone, etc., needs to be sealed prior to grouting. If this tile has a smooth or shiny finish, you need to use unsanded grout so you don't scratch it. They sell commercial cleaner but vinegar and water will take the haze off in most cases. Everyone has their own preferences on sealer, but they're all about the same. Your consideration should be whether you want a shiny or dull finish. Remember, the shiny finish will be slicker when wet than the dull finish.
- Q: i would like to paint over the old yellow tile on our bathroom walls, and of course in the shower. is that possible, and how can i do that?
- With all due respect to you and any others; CAN I is often part of a question asked here. The simple answer is YES! Will you be satisfied? Rarely. Tile is essentially glass; not at all designed to be painted; or have paint strictly adhere to it. You'll get answers that state a specific primer; or some suggestion to ROUGH UP the tile surface. I've been on the planet a long time; and have installed multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile; and applied thousands of gallons of paint; but NEVER together. I'll just say; IF I was asked to do so; I'd refuse a job no matter how much the customer was willing to pay. It isn't something I'd want my name on when the paint starts peeling; or a fingernail happens to scratch it; or attempts to remove soap scum; create a large area of SKIN to come off with the scrubbing action. - Q: I have strip kitchen floor to sub floor. i am ready to install tiles. My question is: How to do the wet bed for laying ties later on.
- I m assuming yo mean a mortar bed or a mud bed for tiles. You don t want to do this for later on as you say. You want to lay tiles soon after it s set so you don t ruin the mortar bed by walking on it. This isnt something you usually just do , it takes practice and a bit of experience and is hard work but worth it when done right. A wet bed is a base of cement that the tiles are installed as you go. Old fashion method rarely used anymore. Now a mud bed is used and then a thin set is used to adhere the tile down. If you want to do a mud bed e mail me through my avatar and I ll guide you through it. GL
- Q: HiIs there an adhesive that can be used to spot repair Vinylfloor tiles 18x18 on a basment floor?
- You can buy the vinyl tile adhesive used to put down the tiles originally or use the same adhesive even if the tiles were peel stick. You'll need to scrape up the old adhesive though, or the tile will sit a touch higher than the rest and probably come loose again. You can also use contact cement gel. Again a smooth surface is needed. Give both the tile and the floor a generous coat and let the cement dry to the light touch. Then stick the tile down and put a weight on it. That should take care of it.
- Q: is there another way to cut tiles ?i dont have a tile cutter , thanks
- you can rent one from Home Depot
- Q: What is better tiles or carpet in a living room considering I have 3 kids ( 4 , 3 and 2 ) ? what about the kitchen?
- I had a house that was ceramic tile through out-I loved it. You know when your tile is dirty and when it's clean its very clean. You'll be able to clean up spills without freakin. Plus you can use rugs and take them out and clean both sides when they are dirty. It's easy to switch out decor- and it always smells good. No lingering food smells. I really think you'd want to pick out a neutral natural looking color with some depth in it so keep the kid-o's from slipping, but when it's time for a new puppy or pet-no sweat-
- Q: im layng tile and the room is 13 long and 11 wide how many tiles would that take
- 13x11 =143 sq ft. If you're using 12x12 tiles then you'll need 143 tiles. A 12x12 tile = 1 sq ft. It's always best to buy 10% extra for mistakes and future repairs.
- Q: I only have a couple of tiles in my shower to grout. I bought some pre-mixed tile grout from Home Depot. It says on the back NOT FOR USE IN SHOWER OR UNDERWATER. I called home depot and they said it would work if I were to seal it. As many know sealer is very expensive and I‘m only doing a couple of tiles that will be exposed to water. Do I have to seal this? I understand there exist grout with sealer already inside.....
- You can get grout sealer in a small tube at Home Depot. If you don't seal these few tiles, you could be creating a larger problem for yourself down the road. Go for the expense, or risk doing damage to the backer board.
- Q: I am about to renewing my kitche.I plan to install tile.Well I have no tile cutter but I do have a simple, regular cutt off electrical tools and a diamond blade.Should this be enough for it?
- The only cutting tool you can't go without is an angle grinder.Get the Dewalt that costs between $50 $60 dollars. It's lighter weight has the amps to make it happen.Buy a diamond blade but do not get the Bosch Turbo. It's inferior. Also, you want a continuous rim on that cutting wheel. The 4in. is the way to go.I can do entire houses full of tile with nothing but a grinder.Gonna be real dusty, though.
- Q: We want to put the same sticky tile over the existing tile just stagger them. Will that be unstable or should we remove the old ones...which seems like work lol
- AS long as the old is stuck well, flat, clean of wax, should be fine . Good Luck
