Q: I got these tiles at a yard sale. They appear to be very old, hand painted and likely of Mexican origin. The label is tattered and faded, but I would love to know more about them. Q: I would like to know what steps to take to prepare the concrete floor for ceramic tile. Part of the floor is cement and part is painted. Do I have to prepare the painted portion before tiling?: I tile every day of my life and since the paint is assumed to be part of some aesthetic over concrete, you can scuff it with a wire brush, belt sander, grinder, cleaning all debris. Beyond that, concrete, unless sealed, is a prime substrate for tile/mortar. Certainly you should check for level, as in depressions or any rise, then proceed as is standard Measure snap two perpendicular center lines adjust those lines for cuts and the least waste work from deep in to an exit point test level with a level or hand use a 1/4 in. toothed rectangular trowel to spread mortar use a poly based mortar use rubber spacers at 1/4 or 1/8 inch do not press aggressively save cuts and cut installs for last and do not attempt to kneel on tiles installed to add a piece missed perhaps remove cove base if it exists to replace later wait no less than 24 hours for dry/set time use Poly blend grout of you choice in color mix both mortar and grout to mashed potato consistency fill grout spaces after removing spacers use a rectangular rubberized spreader/squeegie wipe with a barely damp sponge first time then in 2 or 3 re-wipes as the grout sets you can increase dampness (grout sets faster than mortar) by the third wipe of grout excess you should be ok and notice upon drying a DUST that can easily be mopped away after the fact. allow 24 hrs for grout dry/set If you have a pedestal sink, pull it. Pull the toilet as well Tile to the sewage drain flange and replace with a new wax ring with a rubber flange extender embedded. Mop clean after two days and enjoy Steven Wolf Just my two sense

Q: while laying new floor of tiles, i‘m confused above, which tiles are more durable for floor: homogenized floor tiles or glazed floor tiles, or granite floor tiles: In a home setting it rally doesn t matter what you use. They ll all out last us if they are properly set. And setting is the key from the floor prep to the glueing of the tile with thin set. Two basic type of porcelains, full bodied porcelains where the color goes through out. The backing is basically the same colored as the front. Then you have glazed porcelains where the tile body is porcelain , the porcelain is baked, there is a color or pattern on the surface and then a glaze is applied. Then there is the standard clay bodied tile where the clay is baked , a color on the surface and a glaze and its refired again. Homogenized tiles, and I m not over familiar with them is a very hard tile that has a very low water absorption rate. All are good products but clay tiles are not as true in sizing as most ( not all) porcelains . Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

Q: how to paint over tile: 1) sand with a 80-120 grit sandpaper to get thru the glaze a little, unless the tiles look pretty ragged, then that finish is prob already worn thru 2) clean with a tsp type cleaner (avail from hardware store, looks like a mild carton) 3) if you dont do any thing else PLEASE PLEASE prime it with a decent problem solving primer ( zinzer 1.2.3 ? or whatever brand your local paint dept recomends) primer sticks, paint wears. they both have their jobs, dont skip one 4) paint with your fave colour in a highly washable 100% acrylic latex paint.

What do you guys recommend?: Easy, put down the peel stick tiles. Pull up your carpet and vaccum the floor, peel and stick. . I would seal the sub floor with Bins or a urethane or shellac to prevent the piss smell from getting in the floor and if it already has happened this will keep the smell concealed somewhat but on those hot humid days the smell of urine will be there. Q: why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?: Should the grout come away it can damage underneath especially in shower areas. You should use green moisture resistant plasterboard but ideally cement board on top as it is waterproof and perfect for tiling. Grout will eventually become discoloured and fall away over time in wet areas. Using correct technique in applying adhesive ( notched trowel or plastic notched spreader ) evenly and working within you capability will give you a good result, many try to do too much in one go....which is Ok for the professional. This way the tile will not come away. When applying tile on adhesive try a slight twisting motion to firm the tile in place, by placing finger on the front of tile....Important allow tile adhesive to dry fully before applying grout it takes 12 hrs approx as manufacturers spec. If tile when tapping makes a different sound (kinda hollow sound) it is loose and will need to be removed. Scrap out old adhesive and redo. Tip: Buy sealer (spray for grout) in excessively wet areas as it will extend the grout life and very good for shower areas. You can but sealer applicators but slow....mask and vent out when using spray as not good to breathe in and smell at first....

Q: I have installed tile around my shower and and ready to fill in the gaps between the tile. Grouting looks messy and I don‘t know how to do it. Is there a grout that comes in a tube that can be put into a caulk gun? Can I just caulk the whole thing? This one is new to me so any help is appreciated!!!: Use grout to fill the gaps between your tiles. Work in with a rubber float on a 45 degree angle. Press in hard. Wipe off excess grout from tile with a damp sponge. Use silicone caulk in the corner joints to allow for expansion.

Q: Can you put ceramic tile over the commercial grade hard plastic vinyl tile? It would be really hard to break up off the floor. It is stuck on there really good.: Yes, as long as the sub floor of the VCT is thick enough. Is it over wood or concrete? If it is over concrete, then all you have to do is score the VCT with a razor knife, and apply regular thin-set. I would recommend the one with additive, but it is not necessary. It will say on the bag which sub floors are acceptable. If it is over wood, the wood needs to be at least 3/4 of an inch thick outdoor grade plywood. The best option would be to place cement board over the VCT before setting the tile. This may make your floor height much higher than desired, however. Again, you can go right over it, but you need to score the VCT. In either case, you have to make sure there are no loose vinyl tiles. If there are, you must remove them, or else the ceramic tile might crack.
