- Q: my husband put in tile in the motel i work at and it is ceramic tile and some of the rooms are popping up up can you tell me why? by the way could it be the climate i live in florida!
- I would say either the wrong substrate was used. Substrate is the material directly under the tile. Chances are he installed the tile over another floor material that was not suitable for tile. Cement board is the most widely used substrate, but it needs to be screwed down properly so it does not move at all. If the substrate moves, then the tile will also work loose after stepping on it which forces it to move up/down. If he applied thin set over existing ceramic tile that was not cleaned, the thin set probably did not stick. Pull up a pc. of loose tile - is the thin set or other adhesive still stuck on the back of the tile? Sometimes the wrong adhesive won't stick to the back of the ceramic tiles. Humidity won't affect the tile if it was installed correctly.

- Q: I thought that bathroom floor tiles were thicker than the bathroom wall tiles, is this right?
- Thickness has nothing to do wither they go on the walls or floors. Generally speaking floor tiles are thicker , but not always.. There are several factors in determining if a tile can be used on a flor or not. All tiles can be used on walls but not vise versa. Some determining factors that dictate if a tile can go on the floor is tinsel strength ( how much pressure it can take before breaking in a special test),scratch and slip resistance ..These are 3 of the main factors that tile must be rated in before they can be allowed to be used on a floor. - Q: what causes lippage on a granite floor? i had someone install granite tiles in my bedroom and the lippage isn‘t too bad i must say but 2 or 3 tiles do have A LOT of lippage...was wondering why that would be? thanks so much in advance!
- Hey BigBadShawn, I worked for years in flooring at The Home Depot and I got to see this question come up quite a bit from my customers. Natural stone tiles like granite can be tricky to keep, and lippage can come from various sources. Depending on what is underneath it as well as how the tiles are installed will determine what is the exact cause of the lippage. Usually I've seen with older houses with wood subfloors that prep work wasn't addressed so that over time as the floor joists/subfloor expands, contracts, and settles tiles of any substrate can pop up or create small lippages. The professional way to installed your floor was (hopefully) by the builder using a tile backerboard and/or securing the subfloor securely before laying down the tiles. Also, if the tiles have very thin to no grout lines, it is possible that the events of the floor joists settling makes little room for the tiles to go anywhere but up. With a high-quality flexible mortar, that shouldn't of been an issue. If you noticed a progression over time with your tiles, I'd say you most likely have a wood subfloor on your hands. If it was concrete, it could be a matter of improper installation, moisture, or unevenness of the surface itself that gave it the lippage you see now. Hope this helps you out, aboveaveragejoe
- Q: Do you have, or know someone who has these tiles in the bathroom? What is their experience?
- It depends also how well they stick to the underlying surface. make sure surface is clean and dust free. I used a flooring recently that looks like 12 x 12 tile but the pieces are 12 x 36 and they have an overlay that sticks together. it is a floating floor. Has been trouble free. Good luck
- Q: I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
- In regards to sealing grout, many grouts, like TEC Power Grout, never need to be sealed to maintain stain resistance. You can get TEC Power Grout at Lowe's. For the tile layout, start tiling at the end of the room and work your way out. At the end of the room, find the center point, and do a dry lay out of your tile from the center point to the wall. You want to have at least 1/2 a tile at the wall, although it looks better if you have a full tile along the wall. You also want to have a full tile at the entrance because it looks nice that way. You may need to adjust your dry layout and cut tile with a wet saw so that your tile can fit the space. Good luck!
- Q: I was told that you can use slate (indoor/outdoor flooring) tiles outside on walkway if you mortar them over a concrete walkway.Do they have to be mortared to a concrete walk or is there another way to place the tiles?Part 2. Can you use concrete you mix at home from a bag for laying a new small concrete walkway or do you have to order mixed concrete from a concrete supplier?
- If what you're talking about is REAL slate milled into tile then it is the same as Field Stone, but far more brittle. Natural slate is extremely porous, and much like Plywood, it's a natural Laminate substance. Just a day or two ago I answered a similar Q. Certainly answer number one is valid in suggesting that TILE be secured with an even coat of Exterior mortar, in your case, allowing there will be no voids. You could even install the tile by pressing them down enough, to push the mortar up through the seams/joints, allowing then, that you don't have to grout. Smoothing the lines will be similar however. The problems with natural slate and the conditions it will endure would likely disappoint you if you mortar textured REAL slate onto a patio. Slate Flakes, Chips, Cracks, and absorbs water. If in fact these are manufactured slate tiles, they still will need an exterior grade sealant, and re-sealing on occasion. If they are natural slate/Field Stones, I personally would use tamped sand, or better, tamped, crushed limerock for the base. That won't be possible with manufatured TILE usually at 1/4 inch thick Plus or Minus. Depending on the size of the concrete walk, you may want to consider having a load delivered, or renting a mixer. To do any space with BAGS will be more costly, (given that a 60 - 80 lb. bag only covers approx. 1.5 CU. FT....then time consuming, and may in fact be a dissapointment. YES you can use premix, but if you order a load it will be mixed in the proper formula/ratios, from the supplier. Steven Wolf
- Q: Is Tumble stones tiles a good selection for a kitchen backsplash and if so how often does it need to be sealed?
- Stone tiles and I recommend sealing twice before installing . should not need to be sealed again w/ the newer penetrating sealers. This make a great backsplash in looks and durability. I have several picts of some I ve done over the years if you need an idea of how it ll look. The grout sealed 72 hrs after grouting giving the stone actually 3 coats. - Q: I recently removed some old tile in my kitchen that was bound to the floor with adhesive. I‘d like to either remove the adhesive or make that area of the floor level in order to place some stick tile.What is the best solution for this? Do I need a sealant? Should I chip up the old adhesive and then seal the floor?Thanks!
- Heat sections with a propane torch and remove with a scraper or putty knife. After removal, buy some floor leveller and use as directed. No sealant required. Your new floor and the adhesive you choose will seal just fine.
- Q: we‘re moving into a new home that has hot pink ceremic tile as the kitchen counter top and back splash. Can we paint over the tile or do we need to remove the tile and start over with a new counter top.
- You don't want to paint over them, what you need is to have them refinished or reglazed. this will cost about 30% of tile installation and would be the most economical in the long run. Refinishing the tiles would allow them to last 15-20 years with proper maintenance. Search your area for a tile refinisher/reglazer. Refinishing takes a manner of hours and they should be done in about 4 hours or so. You will be able to use the counters in 24 hours. It really is the only way to go, don't bother reinstalling tile, just have it glazed a color you are happy with! The contractor will be able to match any color you want, so this would be the best deal for your kitchen on a limited budget.
