- Q: My dad layed tiles in his kitchen recently. He had some plywood type stuff that he layed them on top of so they are on a flat, even surface. But then someone told him he should have put a netting type stuff underneith the tiles too, to keep them from breaking. Is that very important, will his floor be ruined now?
- Its called wire mesh. Its not used as much anymore. What makes tiles or grout crack is the wood below the tiles. If the floor joists are too far apart and the plywood is not thick enough it can cause the floor to move. Even a little bit of movement can cause the tiles and the grout to crack. The wire mesh will not help if the floor moves.
- Q: My kitchen floor tile has a number dings or chips caused by something heavy falling on them. Is there a way to repair these without having to remove/replace the entire tile?
- Depends on how bad they are. Sounds like you have an very inexpensive tile on the floor or it would not have all the chips/dings. A cheap temporary fix would be to find a paint to match and just touch up. If you're renting, just try that. If you own, you could do that temporarily while you save up. When you replace though, make sure you get a good quality porcelain tile.
- Q: I have some stick on tile that has come loose in a small hall area at some rental property. can you just lift thme up re-glue them? They are still in great shape.
- Yes...life the entire tile off the floor. Make sure the floor under the tile is clean before re-applying the tile. Lay tile face down on newspaper and spary the clean back (free of debris) with a spray can of glue used for upholstery (you can find it in Lowes). Then wait about 2-3 minutes and stick the tile back in it's place. If you use liquid nails or other squirt on types of glue your tile will show the glue lines through the top of the tile.

- I have seen prices on the web and yes you can get some good prices. BUT Shading for what you see in a picture is vastly different then actual products.... What I would do is to look on line for lines of tiles from a wide range of manufactures and use their store locater to find a dealer near you.I ve seen the way tile is shipped from some sources that are not used to handling tile and you could possible end up w/ chips. Plus your local store has a vast variety of knowledge of trims and what you ll need.. I did my GF s mom s place and we looked at tile to get ideas for her and narrowed down to tiles she liked. The on line price was more expensive than what the store was and what we payed .Any questions you can e mail me. GL

Twelve of the tiles are 4-inch by 4-inch squares, ten are 4-inch by 8-inch rectangles, and the remaining 16 are 2-inch by 8-inch right triangles. - Q: I‘m thinking about having a bathroom tiled. The bathroom is about 6 by 8 and right now the walls have a horrible pink and black alternating ceramic tile that goes up about 4 feet on the wall all the way around. All I want to do is replace this tile with a glass tile. I have no idea what the cost would be for materials and labor so any estimates would be appreciated. This is the only work I need done.

- Q: The shiny surface ceramic tile is set unto a cement slab - it has been there 15 years or more with no cracks. Do I need to rough up the surface before I set the tile- if so how? I have tried sanding it (60 grit), wire brushing it - there is no effect on the surface. Also I live in a small town - we do have a Home Depot - do they sell a good bonding agent? If so what? - I have tiled porcelain over ceramic with long term results. make certain the surface is clean and free of any foreign matter, also use the best modified thin set available and u can also add a latex additive for added strength to the thin set.

- i am doing the same thing and my house is also 1485 sq ft 4 bed room 1 bth living room and kitchen and u dont want to know the price , i checked with lowes and for slate tiles for my kitchen it will cost over 1000.00 for my kitchen , 12x16 room minus where the cabinets are at they said u have to put down a cement like glue then put down a cement like board then the tiles and grout , the 1000.00 is only for the supplies not the labor , for ur other rooms hard wood would cost less than tile or new carpet
- Q: I was wondering if self stick vinyl tile would work well on bathroom walls and if it would stick well to sheet rock or if i have to replace the sheetrock with plywood?
- Use green board. It is a sheet rock panel made for bathrooms because it can endure the many extreme changes in temperature and humidity. And I agree that stick-ons may not last very long. Use tiles and get some good guidance on how to do it and what to use. It's not that complicated.
