Q: I am going to move into a home that has ugly green and yellowish tile all over the kitchen!! The walls and sink are green, the counters are a wood laminate, the floor is an old beige vinyl, and the cabinets are a dark color and are old and dated. What can i do to make this kitchen much nicer on a really tight budget?! Help!!
really tight budget. HUM close your eyes while in your kitchen if your cabinets are stained then you could lighten them they do sell stuff to do this but it is time consuming.if paint paint over them paint the walls a complementary color to the tile then save up your money
Q: We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?
Cut the tile so that it fits around the outside of the existing box, and then obtain some 1/4 box extensions that will bring the boxes out to meet the surface of the tiles you're installing. If you can't locate these, proceed as you've suggested, but cut the tile around the outlet mounting holes, and use longer screws to install the outlets over the top of the tiles.
Q: Do you have, or know someone who has these tiles in the bathroom? What is their experience?
It depends also how well they stick to the underlying surface. make sure surface is clean and dust free. I used a flooring recently that looks like 12 x 12 tile but the pieces are 12 x 36 and they have an overlay that sticks together. it is a floating floor. Has been trouble free. Good luck
Q: What is the double tiles of tiles? How to distinguish polished tiles from the surface and throw glazed tiles. What is the thickness of each? What kind of microcrystalline stone?
Now the tiles, the general sub-base material and fabric. The base material and the fabric are generally not the same. At the end of the material commonly known as the blank, the general use of materials, such as kaolin, river sand, according to a certain proportion of compatibility. Fabric in order to pursue different artistic effects, often in the general use of materials into the whole particles, semi-particles and other translucent materials and color materials. Although seemingly two layers, but the two materials are mixed before firing, after firing does not affect the overall quality. "Double effect" one can guarantee the surface of the different artistic effects, two can save production costs. Because the fabric which joined the translucent materials and colorants, the cost is high.
Q: I have a light colored ceramic tile floor that I would like to refinish with a different look - perhaps a darker color with some textured look to it. Is there some way to do this, or am I better off replacing the tile?
Ceramic tile can not be refinished to have different look. If you do not like the tile, you will need to tear it out and put new tile down. There are many choices available. I would reccomend a porcelaine tile, beacuse they are stronger and more durable than cearmic.
Q: I have tiles in my house. The whole 1st story is tile. Their porcelain. My chihuahua stays downstairs all the time and I was wondering does the tile have any affect on her? The tiles get really cold.
Might be a little slippery and cold, just make sure she has some comfy things to lie on. I have only tile in the areas that my dogs are allowed to hang out in, generally they sleep on the throw rugs, but I know when they first come in and are hot, they will sprawl on the tile under an air conditioning vent. Personally, I can't stand carpet, especially not with dogs.
Q: Can you lay down those adhesive floor tiles on top of existing tiles? If so, what kind of prep do you need to do to make sure they stick properly. I‘m not sure what type of tiles are in place now, but they are similiar to the types used in schools and other institutions. Very cheap, flexible, and bland. I want to lay something down in place of them, but don‘t want to rip them up. Is that possible? Thanks!
That partially depends on how heavy the tiles are and the reinforcement of your wall. I remember when asking about putting tiling in my kitchen that for large areas of wall tile you need a special drywall or wall reinforcement. You may also need a special adhesive to add in addition to the self adhesive since the floor tiles will be put up in a manner that they are not truly designed for.
Q: Once I removed the old tiles is there anything else I should do before I lay the new ones?
Make shore to remove all thinset from floor before installing new tile
Q: I am getting ready to replace my kitchen flooring. It currently has sticky vinyl tiles, which I hate. I want a nice tile look for sure. However, it seems it is very hard work installing real tile, and more expensive. I have seen some laminate click together tile flooring that looks pretty good.Which one is best? Which one would last the longest? Any other insight? Thanks!
Laminate is still basically wood under the top layer, if water does get to it it will swell. I personally have hardwood in my kitchen, which will do the same thing if it gets wet. Ceramic is stone much more stronger only issue is if you drop a pan could chip or crack the tile. Ceramic will last the longest, also if you do crack or chip a tile its an easy fix. Cut the grout joint pop the tile a place another. Laminate is much harder to repair. I have been installing floors for over 20yrs now, I have many pics on my work facebook page if you would like to look RJR Flooring. I was certified years ago to install pergo when it first came out. It came from Sweden. It was produced so they wouldnt have to pay taxes on home improvements. Not a big fan of laminate, but I still install it for whom ever needs it done. Have had to repair many floors and tearout many to install the real thing.
Q: Hi, I just wanted to know if Ceramic tiles are better than stone tiles? When we signed a contract for a new house, they offered us Stone tiles, but now they are calling us and telling that they do not offer stone tiles instead ceramic tiles are now standard. I wanted to know which one is better and why?
Ceramic tile is cheaper than stone but we have installed ceramic or porcelain tiles in all bathrooms for the ease of upkeep. Stone does look richer but it needs to be sealed at least once a year maybe more. The sealing part is easy but the stone tile needs to be completely clean first. That is the 'hard work' part. Ceramic tile will hold up to almost anything in a bathroom and the grout is the only thing that needs sealing. (You'd probably have grout to seal with the stone too) If you signed for stone, I'd make sure that they are going to give you some kind of refund for the difference of the cost. They are saving a a few bucks here so make them pass it on.
