- Q: my husband put in tile in the motel i work at and it is ceramic tile and some of the rooms are popping up up can you tell me why? by the way could it be the climate i live in florida!
- Could be the humidity. What did he use to stick them down? Did he use a mastic that comes already mixed in a tub? If so, there will probably always be problems in a humid or wet areas. Thinset is best for tile.
- Q: For my Science fair project i am testing different types of toothpastes and I was planning on soaking tiles in different liquids to satin them, but I don‘t know which tile would work? Any Ideas?
- Why soak them? All normal tiles have a glazing on them and the glaze finish can be different to test the different stuff you want to test on them. You have bright glaze , matte glaze satin glaze. Some stone tiles with no glaze on them at all that might stain . Some stones you can seal w/a sealer to see how that works. Go to your local mom and pop type flooring store and tell them this is a school project and ask if they have any spare tile to give you. We helped many school projects over the years . - Q: I want to put ceramic tile in my dining room, my room is 12' x 11'. So how would I go about deciding how many tiles I would need? The tiles are 12x12. But for ceramic tiles dont you have to leave space in between them?
- First measure the room from wall to wall.Length and width.Multiply the numbers.This gives you square footage.Add another 15 square feet for cutting and breakage.Tiles are sold per square foot not amount.Space in between does not matter in calculation.This is up to you.If you want a more full look make space smaller.This is easier for maintenance(cleaning).1/4 inch is normal, 3/8 is big.The bigger the space it's harder to grout plus will cost more in grout.Make sure to use grout similar colour to tile.If your floor is wood underneath then you have to fasten it so it does not vibrate and then lay a wire mesh before putting on the tile.This is important,if you do not do this the tiles will crack.To remove them costs more than putting them on.

- A good quality floor tile will be fine, provided they are well supported underneath with no air gapes.
- Q: If you were going to tile an entire room would you start from the walls or floor? The room is only small 12m walls 4m floor is a basic toilet basin. There are no border tiles no fllor to wall tiles.
- To be honest with you it does not matter if you do the floor or walls first. Some people prefer not to do the floor first as they will make a mess of the floor when doing the walls and it will take additional time to cover or clean the floor. And NO you do not always start in the center. In some cases starting in the center will cause you to have very small cut tiles on the edges. You should measure and find the center and dry test tiles with the 1st tile centered in the room checking to find the cut size of the tiles on the outside end. You should never have a tile less than 1/2 on the end. Example a 1 or 2 cut tile is a mistake if the tiles are 6 or larger. If the tile is less than 1/2 its size then start with the 1st tile on the edge of the center line. Always keep the same size cuts on both sides and never end up with small pieces.
