Q: I want to replace the existing ugly linoleum/vinyl floor in my bathroom with tile. With the right information and tools, I don‘t see why I can‘t do it myself. Any ideas on the pros and cons of different types of tile? What‘s least likely to get scratched, and what is least likely crack and need to be replaced? Which is easiest to clean, etc.? I‘m not crazy about a rough feel or look to the tile. So, I‘m thinking of glazed ceramic or polished stone. Also, my bathroom is very small. I wouldn‘t need to use more than 35-40 square feet of tile. Do you think 12x12 size tiles would look too big? Any tips or suggestions will be appreciated!: There are some quite nice ceramic styles but for the classy look you desire i think it can only be acheived with natural stone/marble. it is true that marble can stain as it is porus but if it is sealed correctly it should be ok, but you need to polish and reseal every few years to prevent staining. i fit bathrooms for a living and have taken out marble that is 15 years old that only looks tired because the choice of colour has dated not because of staining etc. but believe me stone looks so much better , go to your local tops tiles and look at the displays of ceramic tile then go to the stone tile show room just to browse and i think you will 'feel' the difference. good luck and i hope the bathroom turns out nice.

What is the best way for long lasting tile strait to plywood?: Short cuts usually create more situations that take longer to rectify than actually doing the job properly. You will need to remove the toe kick from under the cabinets and adjust the height, you must make sure the tiles go at least 3/4 under the toe kick. With regards to the dishwasher, they usually have adjustable legs, I would look into that before you begin this project, you really should tile under the dishwasher. If you ever plan on selling, the tiles installed the way you plan to install them will surely reduce the value.

Q: Hello. The office we work in has what we believe to be vinyl tiles, 12x12, with a white powdery substance that is always on the floor. It looks as though the tile has never been sealed before so I‘m not sure if this is the cause. I have read online about efflorescence. Could this be that? I‘m really nervous because I don‘t know if it is asbestos. There are a few people in this area, and our chairs are constantly rolling around on the floor. THANKS!: Laminate can be cheaper but wont last as long. If you shop around ceramic tile is better in the long run. If you are a diy'er it can be cheaper than laminate.Laminate transitions are very expensive,usually two thirds of the cost of the project when transitioning from laminate to carpet or tile.

That's where you begin laying the tiles. The smaller the space, the more any imperfection will show.

Q: well I burned a small hole in a linoleum tile. How do I fix it?: A heat torch and a putty knife. Heat, lift and pull gently as you apply the heat. Remove the tile and scrape away the rest of the glue and make it as smooth as possible. Get some adhesive and a knotched putty knife and spread an even amount on the space ( not too much ) and insert new tile in place and press firmly. Use mineral spirits to clean up any excess glue and put a weight on it and let set for 24 hours. Done. Good luck with that.
