- Q:We want to put ceramic tile on our front porch, its fully covered but we were told you had to put porceline tile outside not ceramic. Does anyone know or have you done this?
- Actually, it can work. But once the linoleum is there, the tile will be worthless. It will be easier and cheaper to just rip up the entire floor tile and all and start over than it will be to clean all the adheasive off of the tile. If you are sure you want the linoleum anyway, you can go to a place like Home Depot, and get a floor leveler system that is ok to be used over tile. They have it, I have purchased it before. If the tile is glazed (shiny and slipery rather than rough feeling) then you will more than likely need to remove the glazing with sanding or grinding, or etch the glazing with an acid compound such as a muriatic acid mix. I have done this sucessfully when installing 12 x 12 natural stone tile over existing glazed tile in a rental unit before. It work VERY well, as the original tile was in excellent shape and had a concrete backerboard under. Once you have the glazing etched or removed, if needed, and have the floor leveled... you don't absulutely have to, but it would be an excelent idea to install a special plywood underlayment designed for use under linoleum or vinyl flooring. This will have to be glued to the prepared tile surface with a special adheasive. They have this at the Home Center as well. After that, it is just as simple as glueing the flooring down just as any other installation. The reason I wrote all that was to show that it is in fact possible and the outcome is very satisfactory if done right. In the end though, most times it will be easier to rip it up and install the linoleum. Hope that helps.
- Q:I wanted to remove three lines of bathroom wall tiles without distrubing other surrounding tiles. These tiles were fixed on cement around 5 months back.. now we can see cracks on these tiles (different color)..
- Use a sharp pointed tool to scrape out the old grout. Insert a thin sharp blade like a putty knife under the edge of the tile at the top edge. Hit the handle with a small hammer, sometimes once you get the first one off the others come away easily and you won't damage the wall underneath.

- Q:I live in a split level 3 story house, the outside of my house is concrete, the walls inside are concrete and the floor is tile. Several weeks ago the tile in our laundry room cracked, as if something was pushing up from underneath. This morning the exact same thing happened in our top story living room. We had tilers come out to re-tile and they said that this happens all the time, but the concrete underneath the tile was untouched and un-warped in any way. Please help? What can we do to fix this from ever happening again?
- .If your home was recently built, it may still be settling. Homes, especially those built on fill often take several years to settle. The fact it happened in both the basement and the third floor makes me suspect this is the case. Keep in mind that concrete will expand and contract with temperature changes. If you live in the northeast the rapid temperature changes we've been experiencing could also have something to do with it. As far as happening ever again, the best policy is to wait and see. - Check out Home Depot or Lowes.............personal opinion - don't use carpet at all - it holds in so much dirt, dust, mites, smells, etc. Terrible for anyone with allergies. Just my opinion. The only place that has carpet in our house is the stairs and hallway...........put laminate wood flooring in the bedrooms and tile everywhere else. You can buy throw rugs that can be cleaned easier than carpeting. Best of luck!! ?

- Ceramic or a vinyl tile in a property renovation? Vinyl tiles , I d use a VCT or a pure , color all the way through tile. Proper maintenance and keeping in sealed and polished is the way to make this tiles last a long time.. Ceramic tile work great too but the cost and installation product will add up but the tile will out last almost any thing for durability. The slip rating I d suggest nothing less than a 4.. And BTW.. Grout is a lot cheaper per s/f than any average tile, so don t let that bother you. Proper installation is the key to a long lasting ceramic til job.
