Q: hi i live in a upstairs flat, and i want to tile my hall with ceramic tiles,i did a square 4 foot patch to see if the tile would stick or would come loose, well they did come loose,so how do i prepare floorboards for tiling over so the grout wont crack when i walk on the floor thanks
First, I'd recommend making sure that the wood flooring is secure with no loose spots. Then you may need to strip any finish off it in insure good adhesion. Finally, you'll need to make sure you have a good tile cement and use a proper tile trowel to apply the cement. It will put grooves in the cement that will help with adhesion. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, they can probably give you pointers. They also have classes sometimes, including putting down tile. Good luck.
Q: so i was wanting to lay some ceramic tiles down in a small room. right now in the room i think theres vinyl tiles and they r laid right on top of the pplywood floor. so im just wondering am i able to just lay the ceramic tiles right on top of the plywood floor after i tear up scrape up the old floor? any advice?
the plywood is a subfloor. after you remove the vinyl. you should lay an underlayment before tiling. check at the tile store for instructions. Don't think you can do a quick cheap job on tiles because the tiles or grout lines will crack and you'll have to redo everything. The subfloor makes for a clean fresh starting surface and should be screwed down every few inches as per instructions.
Q: HiIs there an adhesive that can be used to spot repair Vinylfloor tiles 18x18 on a basment floor?
I definitely think that it is. A basement does not have to be as decked out as the rest of the house although it can be. There are really nice vinyls now a days that you can choose from so take your time and research well before you purchase. You will be glad that you didn't spend an arm and a leg and still got something nice. Hope this helps and God Bless!
Q: well I burned a small hole in a linoleum tile. How do I fix it?
A heat torch and a putty knife. Heat, lift and pull gently as you apply the heat. Remove the tile and scrape away the rest of the glue and make it as smooth as possible. Get some adhesive and a knotched putty knife and spread an even amount on the space ( not too much ) and insert new tile in place and press firmly. Use mineral spirits to clean up any excess glue and put a weight on it and let set for 24 hours. Done. Good luck with that.
Q: What is Spanish Tile, why is it called Spanish Tile, and is this considered a good flooring option? And how does it feel in summer and winter (concrete slab floor below)?
Spanish tiles such as satillo etcetra is like an adobe, made of clay, very durable and strong, nice looking...It is also prefered for diy'selfers that want to save money and install thier own...Spanish tile usually have slighty irregular edges, not perfectly straight, and on purpose..they do not have to be perfectly straight when laid due to these irregular edges..but keep as straight as possible, but becuase of the irregularities, the eyeball cannot see the ones not perfectly straight..They are a very pourous tile, so use a good sealer after instilation...You can buy these tiles straight edged too, but these would be for the professional to install if you have no knowledge of them..
Q: Sanding parquet floor tiles, advice please. My hall floor is covered in parquet tiles. The tiles themselves are made up on 1 inch by 5 inch sections, 5 to a tile. The tiles are laid so that the grain on the tiles is alternate and opposite its neighbour. So the grain on some go North-South, the next in line goes East-WestMy sander has a face larger than any one tile.Do I have to sand along the grain, in which case I‘d have to buy a tiny grinder, or can I just sand all over the tiles and not bother about sanding along the grain? Assuming I have sanded, how do I seal the completed job? Varnish?
First okorder / wood finish. It ain't cheap but you will be able to add new coats of finish later on without having to completely refinish the whole floor. You can rent a 'square sander' from Home Depot for abut $40 a day. It uses 4 six inch disk type sand paper. It doesn't dig in when started which allows a first time DIY person to do a good job. You move it around by putting pressure on the handle, real easy to use. Takes longer than a belt sander but you won't make mistakes. Make sure when you rent it that you get different size paper AND that they will stick (like velcro) to the sander unit face. You don't want to get home, start to use it and the sand paper disks fall off!! Had that happen with one. If you have a large floor to do rent the sander around 3 pm. You get 24 hours so you can sand from 3-11pm, go to bed, then start over in the morning. Otherwise you have to work from morning to evening. Makes for a long day.
Q: Staining and grout removal aside, are there other disadvantages to using natural stone tile for bathtubs?
err. . .it's not completely waterproof!
Q: Cleaning tiles is a lot of work because they attract mildew, soap scum, etc. Now that the cleaning and scrubbing is done, what‘s next? What‘s an easy and environment-friendly way to maintain tiles? Also, if you have a suggestion for keeping a bathtub clean, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks!
eww... think of all the soap scum and mold that will grow in the nooks and crannies of the tiles. you'll need to clean a lot to keep it under control.
Q: What are the pros and cons for using porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?
Tile terminology could be complicated. maximum varieties of tiles that are created from clay or a mix of clay and different components, then kiln-fired, are seen to be a factor of the better type observed as “Ceramic Tiles”. those tiles could be chop up into 2 communities, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. those non-porcelain tiles are often observed as ceramic tiles by ability of themselves, break away porcelain tiles.for further information bypass to the link that's given under
