Q: Very weird question here. I am petsitting for a family with several cats and dogs. The youngest kitten is living in a bathroom, currently (it is the only small, enclosed, safe place for him to stay until the family returns). Q: my sink has a stench coming up from the drain i believe. not sure what it is or how it got to smell so bad, but seems like it only comes up when i turn the water on(like the water gets the smell moving). really dont know what to do here? any advice?: Hi This smell must be coming from the cat litter. Remove all old litter & wash boxes. Soak boxes with 1/4part clorox & 3/4water for at least an hour. Remove cats from area & close door so they don't try to get into it. Rinse boxes thoroughly & dry, preferably in the sun. Refill with fresh cat litter (with baking soda if possible). All of the ammonia smell should be gone! =) Hope it works for ya!

Q: My wife lost a necklace down the bathroom sink. I took off the trap (which was quite a pain) and got out the necklace. Now as I am trying to replace the parts I realize I can not replace them because all the parts are rusty and corroded. Is it easy to go get some plastic PVC pipe and replace the trap or should I get a plumber to redo the whole thing from the wall to the sink. I know virtually nothing about plumbing so I don't want to screw up and have water running in the walls and fill my wals with mold, etc.: The first rule to plumbing is if you dont know what you are doing then dont touch it. The plumber will cost you a lot of money parts and labor, and labor is around $40 and hour or more. The parts are quite cheep and easy to repair. Without looking at what you are doing it makes it a lot harder to explain or understand what is needed to be done to fix the problem. I would assess that you need a new j-bend and elbow. But I am going to say that you should call a plumber and while he is fixing that problem you should ask him about a new drain trap for the sink. One that might keep this problem from occurring again. Q: Why doesnt my bathroom sink drain right?: Your problem is likely hair and residue from shaving, makeup removal etc. I have done this very successfully in the past. On the back of the tail piece under the sink is a nut that seals the rod that raises and lowers the stopper. Remove it and the rod then the stopper from above. Take a piece of plastic like a lunch bag and cover the hole and screw the nut back over the hole. Take a washcloth and wet it and place it in the drain hole in the sink. Use the handle from a plunger to hold it there and fill the sink 2/3 of the way with hot water. Remove the washcloth and place the plunger over the drain then place the washcloth over the over flow hole in the sink. Now let some water down the drain and start plunging. It's messy but you should see all kinds of black junk start to come up into the sink. Repeat this process a few times and your sink will drain properly. Obviously you need to reassemble the rod and nut and pop up after.

Q: I recently removed a drain plug device for my upstair bathroom sink and removed the trap to clean out my girlfriends hair that clogs the drainage. Since, I have done this I am getting a sewage smell especially when I am running water. What can I do?: Make sure the trap is working properly. The trap needs to maintain water in order for it to stop venting up sewerage. if there is too much of a drop from the sink to the bottom of the trap it will siphon some of the water out of the trap leaving a air gap which will aspirate and vent up. unless there is something still in the sink or pipe before the trap causing the smell, the system is not vented or its not trapped properly. good luck
