- Q: i whant to know what the process is to measure up a job of a basic house for plasterboard off the plan. and how to order the right sized sheets for the job.thanx!
- Plasterboard/ sheetrock comes in 4x8 & 4x12 ft sheets 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.. 4x12s are usually railroaded ( applied horizontally) but are heavy & harder to handle in small residential spaces. Also take into account doubling up if the plans call for fire rated walls or clgs in furnace enclosures or attached garage space. Measure each individual wall surface to the scale of the drawing or pick off written dimensions & divide by 4 if applying vertically in an area w/ an 8 ft clg. Eg a 12 x 16.room will need 14 sheets for walls & 6 sheets for clg. 1/2 thick or better for walls & 3/4 for clgs Wall length total ..12+12+16+16= 56 ft divided by 4= 14 Ceiling area .12x 16= 192 sq ft ( area of ech 4x8 =32sq ft) 192 divided by 32 = 6 In residential construction door & window openings are not figured in unless they are very wide & tall. Measuring too closely can cause you to run short esp if a wall dimensions run out greater than even multiples of 4 & you can consider anything over to be a full sheet & use the cutoff in another space. Your supplier can give est on taping compound , joint tape & fasteners based on your order. Wall & clg sq footage is also used to est paint . wallcovering & floor covering requirements Best regards
- Q: I am making a model that requires me to shape, paint, and glue something that will represent small stone slabs (1/2 thick). I do not have access to power tools. I need to cut out unique shapes and then sand them down considerably to make a dome. I was thinking about plaster board but the material I need does not need to be that sturdy. I basically need something between plasterboard and styrofoam (if that makes sense). Any ideas would be appreciated.
- Foam core board may work. It is a foam board with oaktag (thin cardboard) on both sides of it. Comes in different thicknesses, just google it.

- Q: I have put my flat screen tv on the wall but now all the wires are hanging down from my tv to my sky box and my xbox etc. I have drilled a hole behind my tv and a hole near the floor so that I can drop the wires through to make it more tidy. I tied the cable to a wire coat hanger to push it though but the cavity is filled with insulation and i cant push the wires through to the bottom. Also there might be joists that I haven't found yet. Does anyone know an easier way of doing this?Thanks
- Try using a fish tape before you give up. The fish tape will be stiff enough push through the installation and once you have it to the other hole there is a hook on the end of it you can tie and tape the wires to and pull them with. You can buy a 50 foot fish tape for 20 bucks or so at Lowes.
- Q: when skimming walls, can you do it over backing paper or does it have to be directly on the plasterboard??
- I'm no expert but would think you would need to remove backing paper before plaster goes over it , or paper will become very wet and start peeling away with plaster attached ........................... :)

- I think it should be based on personal preferences and the overall environment to decide it? It does not matter good or bad, each have their own advantages. Gypsum should be cheaper than the board, the market price should be inconsistent everywhere. You can go online to inquire.
- Q: whats the difference between gypsumboard and plasterboard?
- Plaster board is water resistant. Gypsum board is regular sheetrock and needs to be taped with join compound as apposed to plaster.
- Q: We have recently had a fairly big extension and now a considerable amount of our walls are plasterboard. I had painted one room a couple of months ago and now some of the screws have popped through from the plasterboard. I am now at the point where I need to paint my hall but I am reluctant to do this if some of the plasterboard screws are going to show through again. Should I get the walls skim coated or if any of the screws were going to pop would they have done so by now. Also is it expensive to skim coat?P.S I did paint the bathroom ceiling and first coat the surface was fine, went to give it a second coat and one of the screws had 'popped' Am I doing something wrong with the paint?
- sounds like the screws were not properly set or sealed to begin with- probley just poor workmanship. Just so ya know after the screws are put in they need to be sunk in a bit with some pressure - then sealed with mud or patch. I would guess your contractor did that already. ? and are you sure they used screws? i only ask cause sometimes nails are used and they pop causing the problems you mentioned- but the right screw is used it is uncommon that would happen. If you live in a moist area where there is high humidity - it is possible that the plasterboard has expanded a bit pushing the screws out- you can have the humidty levels checked - or you can probley feel if there is excess moisture in the room and maybe that can be cleared up with good ventilation. It is also possible they did not use a long enough screw, or the beam was not hit when it was screwed in- if thats the case then there probley is no remedy except basicly removing all the screws and repositioning them.
