- Q: Put my foot through the plasterboard and need to get it fixed asap. how would i be able to repare it ? its about 4-5 inches wide and about 3 inches long.
- The quickest and easiest fix is to go to a big box home store when they open this morning and buy the drywall patch kit. It is a square or rectangular, semi hard flat piece of material that you can cover the hole with, then get a small container of drywall compound and a plastic drywall knife and follow the directions. Cost may be $15 max, may take you 25 minutes if lucky. Try to make it smooth the first time and sanding may be eliminated depending on how good you need the finish.
- Q: I wanted to mount our LCD on the wall and have discovered that its a plasterboard wall with an inch of plaster, and not brick as I originally thought. I know that I needed to find the studs behind the wall to hang the TV from so I bought an electronic stud finder which has been pretty useless. Kept giving me inconsistent readings. So I bought a superstrong rare earth magnet and tried that to find the nails instead. Its not finding anything at all so now I'm confused. I just want to get this darn TV up but I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Are there special screws which can go into plasterboard and be strong enough to hold a TV (32 inches)? Has anyone mounted their TV without going into the studs? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
- as in several answers above, u do not want to trust to sheetrock only, even w/ mollybolts. At best, a mollybolt will spread the weight over 2 inches and that is not enough to protect the investment u have, on just plasterboard. Maybe try mounting a piece of plywood to the wall, attaching to several studs (two at least). make it small enough that it will not be seen and big enough to catch ur bracket attachments. Paint it to match the wall and u can even use a router around the edges or simple quarter round moulding, to give it a finished appearance. Just painting it should be enough, if sized just an inch or so bigger than u need, yet long enough to catch two studs. If that means recentering the tv, it is worth it for the money u have laid out for it. good luck and always listen to red, lol

- Gypsum board generally used surface density measurement, for example: 9.5mm thickness gypsum board, the national standard requires its surface density to be less than 9.5Kg / m2, but most of the better quality gypsum board density control in (6.5-7.2) Kg / M2. If compared with the density of water, the proportion of ordinary gypsum board is less than water. But the refractory board due to gypsum core inside the addition of glass fiber, depending on the amount of added, the density may be greater than the density of water.

- Plasterboard/ sheetrock comes in 4x8 & 4x12 ft sheets 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.. 4x12s are usually railroaded ( applied horizontally) but are heavy & harder to handle in small residential spaces. Also take into account doubling up if the plans call for fire rated walls or clgs in furnace enclosures or attached garage space. Measure each individual wall surface to the scale of the drawing or pick off written dimensions & divide by 4 if applying vertically in an area w/ an 8 ft clg. Eg a 12 x 16.room will need 14 sheets for walls & 6 sheets for clg. 1/2 thick or better for walls & 3/4 for clgs Wall length total ..12+12+16+16= 56 ft divided by 4= 14 Ceiling area .12x 16= 192 sq ft ( area of ech 4x8 =32sq ft) 192 divided by 32 = 6 In residential construction door & window openings are not figured in unless they are very wide & tall. Measuring too closely can cause you to run short esp if a wall dimensions run out greater than even multiples of 4 & you can consider anything over to be a full sheet & use the cutoff in another space. Your supplier can give est on taping compound , joint tape & fasteners based on your order. Wall & clg sq footage is also used to est paint . wallcovering & floor covering requirements Best regards

- Since it is a small area you can look for a higher price than average. maybe as much as $30 per sheet(labor only) finished ready to paint.

- Your studs should be at 16 centres (or metric equivalent) depending on the age of your house. You may be able to find studs by gently tapping along the wall which will sound hollow until you reach the stud.

- plasterboard adhesive is easy and quick. Don't batten the brick and fix to that - more work and time and more thickness.
