- Q: was the chair of torture used on anyone famous?was it used in public places or hidden away?what agony did it produce?was it the worst, most horrific ever invented?
- Origins: Used during the middle ages, it was used until the late 1800's in Europe. Appearance: There are many variants of the chair, though they all have one thing in common: spikes cover the back, arm-rests, seat, legs-rests, and foot-rests. The number of spikes in one of these chairs ranges from 500 to 1,500. Use: To avoid movement, the victim's wrists were tied to the chair or, in one version, two bars pushed the arms against arm-rests for the spikes to penetrate the flesh even further. In some versions, there were holes under the chair's bottom where the torturer placed coal to cause severe burns while the victim still remained conscious. This instrument's strength lies primarily in the psychological fear caused on the victims. It was a common practice to extract a confession by forcing the victim to watch someone else be tortured with this instrument. The time of death greatly varied ranging from a few hours to a day or more. No spikes penetrated any vital organ and the wounds was closed by the spike itself which delayed blood loss greatly. Whether it was one of the most horrific is debatable, but there are records of people committing suicide before being subjected to this type of torture.
- Q: A factory for the construction of quality furniture has 2 divisions: a machine shop where the parts of the furniture are fabricated, and an assembly and finishing division where the parts are put together into the finished product. Suppose that there are 12 employees in the machine shop and 20 in the assembly and finishing division and that each employee works an 8-hour day. Suppose further that the factory produces only two products: chairs and tables. A chair requires 384/17 hours of machine shop time and 480/17 hours of assembly and finishing time. A table requires 240/17 hours of machine shop time and 640/17 hours of assembly and finishing time. Assuming that there is an unlimited demand for these products and that the manufacturer wishes to keep all employees busy, how many chairs and how many tables can this factory produce each day?
- Let t and c represent the number of tables and chairs produced each day, respectively. We want the total number of production hours to match the number available. .. (240/17)t + (384/17)c = 12*8 ... machine shop hours .. (640/17)t + (480/17)c = 20*8 ... finishing hours We can eliminate fractions by multiplying the first equation by 17/48 and the second equation by 17/160. .. 5t + 8c = 34 .. 4t + 3c = 17 These equations can be solved by any of the usual methods. Perhaps Cramer's rule is a useful method here. .. t = (34*3 - 17*8)/(5*3 - 4*8) = 17(6-8)/(-17) = 2 .. c = (5*17 - 4*34)/-17 = 17(5-8)/-17 = 3 Producing 2 tables and 3 chairs each day will keep the factory fully occupied.
- Q: Hi!I have a typical desk/office chair and I want to reupholster its seat.It is made of nylon fabric.I would like to know if it is possible to find a store that sales upholstery for desk chairs (And which also has upholstery that will fit my chair properly), and how hard will it be to take off the current upholster and put the new one (Is it possible anyway?)Thanks!
- There should be screws underneath holding the seat to the chair. Take them out and the seat will lift off. Measure the size and buy fabric, which by the way Walmart sells heavy grade upholstery fabric. But, buy it where each seat piece will have at least 4 inches overhang on each side. Just lay the seat on the fabric and use a staple gun to staple the new cloth on. (Try to keep the padding that is there now, unless it's worn or too dirty.) When stapling, start in the center of the first side and work out. If there's too much excess fabric, just trim it off. Then re-screw them back on the chair. Voila!
- Q: I have 3 suede computer chairs that cannot be used due to the embarrassing stains. What are some products that would eradicate this mess? Thanks!
- It depends are they suede or suede cloth but either way you will use club soda and a gentle detergent like woolite. Go to step by step directions. Click on the clothing and fabrics tab. It's the best site I have ever found. Lots of good information in one spot.
- Q: I didn't lose all that much weight, mind. But without that little bit of natural padding, my butt and legs get really really sore very quickly from sitting in my office chair. I'll admit, it was the cheapest office chair they had, but this was never a problem before. What should I do about this? Should I get a better chair, or just like a cushion or something?
- Get a new chair. A good chair is important. Do NOT skimp on a chair if you plan on working in it. Don't break the bank, but don't skimp. Same is true for shoes, flooring, kitchen knives or anything you need on a daily basis. Cheap things are cheap for a reason. My parents taught me long ago to get nice things, keep them a long time and spend the money once. You'll be happier and it is less expensive in the long run. That said, price can be indicative of quality, but it is never a MEASURE of quality. A $60 chair probably won't fit well or last long. A $500 dollar chair is a rip off or some art-deco thing that doesn't aid your comfort any. Shop around and you'll find something.
- Q: I found a very cool shaped very old chair at a junk shop for $5. It is in fairly good shape and sturdy (none of the arms or legs wiggle). But it is missing the seat, which I would imagine was one time a woven cane seat that has fell out. I would prefer not to re-cane a new seat (I have done this before, but I don't find it comfortable to sit on this type of seat and they don't wear well). I would much rather put in a padded upholstered seat, but am not sure how? There is just a large hole in the middle where the seat used to be, and I'm having trouble thinking of ways to attach a piece of wood with padding and upholstery. It doesn't have to be super sturdy, as it won't have more than a 170lb person in it, and will more than likely not be used daily (it will be for our bedroom). Any ideas?Chair similar to this one (no seat)- http://krypton.mnsu.edu/~wayne/Caning/roundchair.JPG
- Well, I think the thing to do here is cut a piece of 1/4 plywood and inch or so bigger in each dimension than the hole. then put your piece of foam on it with some spray adhesive, and wrap like quilt batting and upholstery fabric over it and staple underneath. then to attach, without damaging your antique frame, I would say attach some turn button type things. If you glued some blocks onto the plywood just a little thinner than the chair frame, and then some longer blocks screwed to those which trap the chair frame under them.
- Q: Where was the Queen Anne Chair first manufactured? And who designed it?
- The chairs were designed for Her Majesty's comfort and would have been designed and erected by the Master Carver of the Royal household. It incorporates cabriole legs which comes from ancient China. During the reign of Queen Anne the master carver and joiner of the Royal Household was a Charles Hopson, although the chair may not be primarily designed by him. Hopson, who was later knighted to become Sir Charles Hopson, is also responsible for much of the woodwork in St. Paul's Cathedral. I'm afraid, this is all the information I am aware of.
- Q: Where can I fix a woobly chair? I love my dining chairs, but they are all woobly.
- You have written wrong spelling of wobbly. First understand what is wobbly. Wobbly is derived from the word wobble which, means shake or move from side to side in a way that shows poor balance. I will give you one example so that you can understand how to fix a wobbly chair. After reading these steps you will be able to fix uneven legs on a wobbly chair. 1.Start by placing the chair on a perfectly flat surface. 2.Slide a wood shim under the short leg so the the chair no longer rocks. 3.Trace the outline of the chair leg on the shim. 4.Cut the shim to size using a hole saw. 5.Attach the shim to the leg and hold it in place with a furniture glide. 6.Install glides on the other three legs.
- Q: I have an office chair someone gave me and I am trying to get a musty smell out of it, is this possible? I was going to put it outside to air it out. Any other suggestion?
- Sprinkle baking soda on it and let it set for a day then vacuum. You may have to do this a couple of times.
- Q: My dad had a chair with this build, but without the cushy padding, and the arm-rests, it was simpler. Anyway, his broke and I wanted to see if i could dig up an old one like the one he had.
