- The question is: how big of an area? If it is kinda small 3 x 3. You are going to have to do some surgery! First way: Find a spot of carpet that is good and hidden. Like in the corner of your closet. Take a really sharp knife ( utility knife works good here) and carefully cut out the burnt part. Then cut out the exact size piece in the hidden place. Swap the pieces out. Be careful to not cut into the padding under the carpet. Do not grab a good piece that is close to a seam (you'll just create more problems). You can glue the new carpet down with wood glue, just not too much. I hope that your carpet is thick, or this will not work. Also, you don't want the new piece getting sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. I really think you should just tell your mum though. You might get into a bit of trouble, but If she finds out that you did unqualified surgery on her carpet you are going to really be in a world of hurt!

- Ok, is the carpet still wet?? If it is, then get yourself a dehumidifier to dry it out. If it is dry and still smells then there is most likely mold under there. The mold smell will not go away and the worse it is, the worse for your health it is. Have the carpet steam cleaned first, then still get yourself a dehumidifier to dry the carpet this time just to be sure it dries in a timley manor and does not do this again. If after a steam cleaning it still smells... well then the carpet is ruined and will have to be replaced. Good luck.

- Carpet now is amost always stain resistant odor resistant. You would want almost a commercial grade carpet, a lot are very attractive. But carpet's gotten very expensive - hardwoods are actually about the same price or less. You might want to consider this alternative with kids pets.

- Most rugs shed, but they do get significantly better over time. You just have to stick with it. Vacuum it regularly to tease out the bits of fluff that are ready to go. I myself got a new rug on Saturday, but it sounds like the next 6-12 months will be hell...!

- I have always washed and dried my bathroom rugs in the washer and dryer. I have done this for years without any problems. Just don't leave the rug in the dryer for too long. Just enough to get nice and fluffy. Good luck. Carolyn
