Q: When it is time to replace wiring in a building?: Some places require a re-wiring of a home if you replace the main service panel and the wiring is old, such as post and wrap or two conductor. In general, unless you have very old wiring, have had a fire, or need to upgrade your power availability in a room, you will not need to replace the wire. And my advice, if you have ANY post and wrap, or cloth insulated two-wire, get it replaced. That stuff is a fire hazard, as the rubber and cloth in those kinds of wires breaks down after decades, and can allow arcing to occur. Which can lead to a house fire.

When you are shopping its important that you know for sure 1. what size you need (there is a big difference between copper and aluminum) 2. how many conductors you need (3 if it is for the utility service coming to your house - in almost all cases) 3. and insulation rating (to be buried, it MUST be rated as direct burial) Be sure of what you're buying off of something like craigs list because you'll have a hard time returning it, and it sounds like quite an investment you're about to make.

If it is on the safe voltage side you could cut the wire, strip back the wires about 1cm, and twist them together, then solder the wires. If you varry the current the temperature of the wire will also vary. You have to take into account the actual diameter of the wire, the wider the wire, and constant current, the cooler the wire will be when you run electricity through it. If you have a wire with HIGH resistance it will get HOTTER, thats how light bulbs work.

WHAT SHOULD THE OHMS BE?: any wire, unless it is very long or very thin, will measure zero ohms on an ordinary ohmmeter. But check for continuity does not completely check a cable. Most cables have several conductors in them, so you need to check each one end to end, and check resistance between the wires. Between them, it should measure open or infinite ohms.
