Run a sink tape down the drain and give it a few hardy turns and work it in and out of the drain pipe. This will dislodge most clogs and then just reassemble and flush the sink with Hot water.

Have him shut the water off under the sink , remove the cartridge ( or stem) and put a rag over the hot water opening then turn the valve under the sink back on for a few seconds to blast out whatever is in the pipe. Then he can try to clean the cartridge out or evaluate the condition of the washer on the stem if it isn't a cartridge. Assuming the water came out full force when the cartridge/stem was removed it is resolved by cleaning or replacing. If no water came out, it is time to work your way back down the plumbing system to see that everything is turned on. Once you have eliminated everything you can, it will then make sense to call a plumber if the hot water still doesn't work.

The trap needs to maintain water in order for it to stop venting up sewerage. if there is too much of a drop from the sink to the bottom of the trap it will siphon some of the water out of the trap leaving a air gap which will aspirate and vent up. unless there is something still in the sink or pipe before the trap causing the smell, the system is not vented or its not trapped properly. good luck

Q: I have a new vanity and the last few weeks when i run the water a terrible smell comes from the sink opening after a few minutes it goes away. Any ideas -THANKS.: the only thing i can think of is that maybe the toilet is sucking the water out of the sink s j trap pipe. look under the sink and you'll see what i'm speaking of. that trap pipe is supposed to always have water in the curve of the pipe so the SEWER PIPE AIR cant make it past that trap. now i've never heard of that happening, but it's the only thing i can think of that will cause that problem.
