Q:My son recently participated in a regional honor band. The band consisted of 28 trumpets. They had to audition for placement. Placement ranged from 1st trumpet/1st to 7th chair, 2nd trumpet/1st to 7th chair, 3rd trumpet/1st to 7th chair and 4th trumpet/1st to 7th chair. Can anyone explain to me where he stood ability-wise within the group of 28? He was 1st trumpet/7th chair. Thank you.: 1st trumpets are usually the ones who play the higher notes, so more skilled. So he ranks pretty high :)

Q:So I'm only in middle school, but I'm already studying college work from my private teacher. I skipped a whole wad of grades in music. I'm studying some serious stuff. Whenever I perform in front of people, I mess up. I practice about four hours everyday, and EVERY SINGLE TIME it's perfect. But I perform just once in front of people and I mess up. I don't think I'm scared about performing in front of people; I'm just worried about my placement. Anyway, my teacher told me I'm part of the 1/10 of the people he's ever taught, and that 1/10 is all the extremely gifted kids. I also play the piano, longer than I have than being a percussionist, and I have also skipped grades. Recently because of me being nervous, I got second chair. I am a complete music freak, so second chair is extremely horrible for me. And I’m even more depressed now. I’m already depressed about other things, and this is making it even worse. So now I feel extremely stupid for getting second chair…so…what should I do??!: Meico: Is it possible your musical ability has outpaced your public performance skills, which may be more typical for your age? When I was your age I was talented beyond my years, but in certain situations my body showed signs of nervousness. I had trouble playing guitar standing up because my knees would shake. This would only happen when the audience was very attentive. I guess I felt a bit under the microscope. In more casual situations my nervousness was mostly excitement, and I could deal with it. Here are two suggestions that might prove useful. When you're preparing for an audition, sit back in a comfortable chair in a quiet room. Close your eyes and imagine yourself performing. Pay attention to your muscles. Don't allow yourself to tense up. You're performing at your best, the listeners are hearing your best, and, although you may be a bit nervous, it is only impacting your performance in a positive way. Practice your pieces in your mind this way and - very important - accept that you are indeed this kind of performer, one who does well under pressure. If possible, find a critical audience or listener to perform for as a preparation for an audition. Think about it: it's easy to practice the music, but how do you practice being in front of an adjudicator? You might just have to carry on until you've auditioned enough times and gained enough experience to overcome the problem. Good luck.

Q:i tried buying her a scratcher, she uses it, but she still scratches my wood room set chairs. its getting annoying. no matter how much i yell her, does it anyway.: You could try putting double-sided tape on the areas that the cat scratches on the chairs. It's totally harmless (she won't want to scratch the chairs if they're sticky) and it won't harm your furniture either. Some pet stores also sell a spray that you can buy that people can't smell, but it smells bad to cats. This works for us too. Once she sees that she can't go near the chairs, she'll go right back to using the scratcher. Good luck :)

Q:i am considering getting one and am wondering if we can play my surround sound while using the game chair with a dvd player, tv, xbox. Or do we just have to listen to movies from the game chair speakers: Depending on the particular chair you get, and what you actually want to do, the answer is going to vary. Most gaming chairs I've seen at least support stereo audio via the red/white RCA cables. So what you could do is connect your devices to the surround sound system as normal, then run a pair of the red/white RCA cables from the Receiver's 2nd room outputs. I don't know if your receiver has this feature or not, but it would allow you to have the receiver playing audio through its speakers and your chair at the same time. Another option would be to connect the RCA audio cables directly to the device in question. You'll need a set of long cables for this, and maybe a male-male adapter plug (you can get these from Radio Shack.) Another way would be to get a cheap A/V switch (the type for composite video) and just plug your audio cables into that, then plug the chair into the switch. Most devices can output an audio signal on all their outputs at once so this shouldn't be a problem.
