Q: I laid a new porcelain tile floor in my bathroom. Old linoleum tile floor was in good shape so I just laid right over the top of it. All turned out well except around the toilet. Two of the tile cracked when I screwed the toilet back down to the floor. Obviously I‘ll have to pull the toilet again, remove cracked tiles and start over....but how to I avoid the cracks again?
You should have done a better job from the start. Don't lay tile over vinyl period. How to maybe salvage your project without starting over. Remove the cracked tiles. Cut away the vinyl in the area lay the tile directly on the sub-floor and make sure you have adhesion. In addition to using notched trowel back butter the tile. Let it dry completely and grout. When you reinstall the toilet make sure you don't over tighten. This is not how I would tell you to lay tile, but your other choice is to rip everything up, including the vinyl and install a proper underlayment, like dura-rock and re-tile.
Q: I have a purple tub and purple tile through out the bathroom ,how do I change the color ,is there paint I can buy
there are special enamel paints just for glass and tile. try a craft store.
Q: I purchased a DIY tile backsplash kit which costs originally $134.00. Kit includes 15 sq feet of tile, grout and tools needed to install. Lowe‘s sells the kit. The problem is the color is not the color I need. So I have this bright idea to paint the tile the color I want. I only paid $40.00 for the kit. I called one of the paint suppliers and they told me a spray paint I could use for the glass tile, however, I am afraid tha after I paint the tile, install it and then add the grouting, it may take the paint off!. I don‘t know, if it would or not. I was thinking I could spray polyurethan over the tile before I grout it or would that work? Not sure what to do. This kit is a new method for putting up a backsplash in your kitchen. It is actually peel and stick and then you must grout within 2 hours.

Q: I had subway tile installed over a standard size tub. The tiler used 2 x 6 bullnose for the vertical boarder rather than maintaining the staggered look by using 3 x 6 bullnose short as I initially intended. Is there a most common approach for the vertical subway boarder around a tub?
There is no particular common approach for tiling a vertical border with bullnose pieces. It is usually just personal preference. Sometimes people will not even use a bullnose piece for the border, they will just pick out some type of decorative piece and use it for the border. Assuming that you used a ceramic gloss white or black (most common colors in subway tiles) , there is usually a wide variety of sizes available in bullnose peice sizes. It is NOT Uncommon for your border pieces to be a different size than the rest of your subway tile if the size picked finishes the tile work off and ties it together in an interesting way. If however you were prompted to ask this question because you asked a Tile Installer to use the 3x6 size and he refused stating that he was using the most common method, then you are most likely dealing with an installer that did it a way other than you specified because he(or she) did not feel like taking the time to make extra cuts it would require for your size to work... The only exception to my last sentence would be if there is something structural that I am not aware of. Hope this helps.
Q: my dad is does tile. He has quite a bit of leftover tile from various jobs. Is it possible that we can recycle tile?
yes, there are several things you can do with them. - use the scraps to cover an old table and now you have one that looks brand new - advertise them on Craig's list - you can use them to cover jars to make candle holders - i have seen some people use scraps of tile to make jewelry - put felt pads on the back of them and make coasters or a trivet - take broken pieces and attach them around the edge of a mirror these are just a few! I'll bet if you tried to get rid of them you would possibly find someone who might even pay you for the leftovers!
Q: Have you used the marble tiles, the quality, the price?
In the choice of floor tiles, the focus should be considered such a few aspects: First, look at the brand. Only the well-known brands of floor tiles, the quality of its building materials to meet the national standards, the content of harmful substances in the safe range. Second, to see its anti-fouling ability, if the family are very busy, two or three days to clean a health, it would choose to better defrost capacity. Third, if the home has the elderly and children, then the purchase must be made about non-slip test.
Q: I am making a movie for school and i need to hang things from our ceiling to the ground. The problem is is that the ceiling is an acoustic tile and i‘m not sure if it will hold enough. (This is one of the older acoustic tiles with all of the holes in them.
Been there, done that... Can't happen. What you can do, however, is go to the hardware store and buy new ones OR if replacing them is out of the question, get a can of KILZ paint primer. It is the best stain blocker on the planet. Once you cover it with Kilz, it WILL still show through the Kilz, itself, but once you have one or two coats of regular pain over it, you will never see the blood again.
Q: hello, this is my first tile and grout job, tiling is done now for grout. bought premixed grout, rubber float, sponge, started grouting last night, put grout on the float and applied to the tile. pushed it into the space between tiles, but it seems like alot fell off in the tub (its in the spaces between tiles) but is this normal for the grout to fall off the wall (i guess it would be considered excess?) but is that normal no sure how applying grout is suppose to look? i know i need to let it sit for 24hrs then do clean up then seal it when done. plz let me know if that grout falling in tub is normal or am i doing something wrong? ( grout is in the grout line though) just looks like alot is falling, or am i useing to much at one time? don‘t know? thx again for any info. mike
it is practically unavoidable not to make a mess when grouting tile on vertical walls (unless you are a pro). . .but, just like anything else, the more you do it, the more efficient you become. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as your joints are completely full. One concern would be the 24 hour wait period to clean up. . . After you fill your joints with grout it helps to hold your float at almost a 90 degree angle to wipe off the excess grout on the tile. The more you can wipe off, the easier it will be to clean. I usually start sponging with clean water after about 10-15 minutes after the joints are filled (depending on joint width). Fill a 5 gallon bucket with clean water and continue sponging the excess grout off the tile and cleaning your sponge as you do it. Once you are satisfied with how clean the tile is, let it set for another 30-45 minutes. There will be a light grout film or haze on the tile. Take a cheesecloth or the inside of a sock and wipe off the haze. . .wait a day or two then seal it. But, I certainly wouldn't wait 24 hours to clean the tile, it may be too late.
Q: I bought tile effect laminate flooring for my kitchen. How do I stagger the joints, but line the grout seems up at the same time? There are four equal tiles per a plank.
The tiles should be the same size or in a pattern such that you can off set the joints and still have the tilegrout lines still line up. Or some of them you can both off set the joints and do a offset or brick pattern in the laminate itself. This type of laminate you ll need more than normal scrap because you will scrap more out on this type of laminate. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar, I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a few 100,000 s/f.. GL
Q: How does the concrete on the tiles clean?
Daily cleaning: clean soapy water Mud: linseed oil Precipitate, rust, mortar: nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid solution
