Q: I am wondering which tile will be easier to clean, polished or non polished? My hub and I are remodeling the bathroom and we are in the stage of deciding of tiles for the shower wall and bathroom floor.
I will say polished, less pourous.=)
Q: i have an area of tile covering one corner of my bedroom in my rented flat - will wallpaper stick to it?
It will not likely stick to glossy ceramic tile, but if you have a natural stone tile, or a textured tile, it might. It's not something people usually do.
Q: For a while now I have just used paper towels as a substrate for my 2 leopard geckos and I recently have been researching slate tiles as a substrate and I want to give it a try due to the positive feedback i‘ve seen on message boards and care sheets. Now, I have 2 10 gallon tanks that I would like to use but details are lacking from an online source.1. What measurements should i ask for when getting a piece of slate cut(for a generic 10 gallon tank)?2. Is there a certain thickness the slate should be for proper heat disbursement?3. How warm should the slate be allowed to get if i‘m monitoring it with a thermometer? I know I could measure out the tank myself, but I was just curious if there was a size that fit better than what a measurement would give me. Thank you for the feedback.
I use slate tiles for my 3 geckos tanks. They work great. 1. A 10 gallon tank is generally 20in X 12in. Because not all the tiles are the same size I would go with cutting the tile slightly smaller to make sure they fit. So maybe 19 1/2 and 11 1/2. You will probably need 2 tiles for each tank so you could cut them anyway you want ( 10 and 10, 12 and 8, 6 and 6, etc. You can fill the gaps with sand later on. The 12 X12 tiles could be slightly smaller, slightly larger, or longer then they say. 2. No really, though you do want them to be fairly even in the tank. Most of my tiles are about 1/4 inch but I also have a layer of sand under the tiles so they are level even if the tiles are different thicknesses. 3. You want them to be warm but not too hot. Because leopard geckos use belly heat you'll want them about 88-90F. I would not let the tiles get over 95F though.
Q: We have a fireplace in our lower level that is outdated, dingy old masonry and doesn‘t fit with the rest of our updates down there. I would like to tile over it and have it ready for use before our family comes over for Thanksgiving. What is the best method?
You can attach tile directly to masonry, it has been done all over the world for centuries (Italy, Spain, Middle East all use tile on the exterior of buildings...) I would assume normal thin-set mortar would work, but I believe it would depend on the exact type of masonry- concrete block or clay brick. A thicker adhesive bed will likely be necessary to smooth over the rough surface, but because of the relatively porous surface of most types of masonry your bond should be excellent. My only word of caution would be if you have any cracks in the masonry. Make sure they are not active (widening and narrowing), which may occur with temperature and humidity swings. Either way, you may choose to weld the crack with epoxy to prevent any crack movements that may telegraph through your tile and crack it. Q: im making this really cool projecr for my moms birthdayy and i need a few tiles. plain tiles. where can i get them individually and cheap? ‘ how much will it cost? (per tile)
Most tiles are sold by the square foot,(s/f). But most places like Home Depot and Lowes will sell the small tiles , like the 4 inch tile per piece. I ve seen them as low as 8 cents a pc for basic white and cream ( bone colored) . Matte and high gloss both. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Q: How to judge the quality of tiles?
First, look at the surface tile color Market tiles of various types, color is also a wide variety, according to the tiles of the variety and technology, tiles can be divided into anti-skid brick, polished tiles, tiles, glazed tiles, micro-brick and other types. If the quality of tiles according to the grading also has a variety of grades, mainly divided into excellent products, qualified products, and other goods. To check the quality of tiles and their own post-paste only need to be carefully observed through the problem can be found, the quality of their own tiles is relatively poor need to replace the tiles are mainly reflected in the tiles surface cracks uneven, corners are not Floor tiles, although the surface looks bright, but the glaze layer surface color problems or glaze layer or glaze layer of inclusions spots. The quality of the tiles after paving the main inspection of the overall surface of the flatness in the range of two meters is not greater than two millimeters, between the brick and brick joints are not greater than 0.5mm, seam flatness in the length of 5m No more than 3mm, if more than the above data within the range are unqualified. Second, the percussion test tiles installed with or without hollowing In the room, around the room with a small iron bar and other special inspection of the wall hollowing the tool, gently tapping the four corners of the tiles and the middle of the sound crisp no hollowing, if detected the problem of hollowing, should be marked out, Timely eradication with floor tiles. Third, in the tiles on the splashing water detection In the kitchen, the bathroom has a drainage slope requirements of the floor tiles paved tiles, in check their water is smooth, in the slope above a lot of water can be detected. After pouring water in the above, waiting for a moment, see where there is water to show that the floor tiles paved uneven, or to the water slope is not enough.
Q: i am getting my kitchen done over in 2 weeks cost is not a factor i cant decide to do tiles or harwood flooring which is better for the kitchen. i have two kids 2 and 5
I prefer ceramic tile in a kitchen simply because every hardwood floor I've ever had was slippery if liquid was spilled on it. There are issues with keeping the grout clean as someone pointed out, but good maintainence will take care of that. Another factor you'll want to consider is the look of everything else. If you are going with wood cabinets, hardwood floors might be too much. Or if you have a tile countertop and backsplash, tile flooring might be too much. Look at both and compare them to the other elements you have choosen for the kitchen, that will probably make the decision very easy. But either, ceramic tile or natural hardwood, both add a lot of value to your home and look beautiful.
Q: What is the best way to paint over brown wall tiles
After thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and thousands of gallons of paint, (not together) and with all due respect to you and others; this is kind of like a CAN I? question. Tile is essentially glass. Certainly you CAN probably paint over, but may never truly be satisfied with the result, especially over any long term. Also with no offense at all, and not needling you over a misspelling, I had to chuckle at Pinting. I've probably done a lot of that too, and in fact probably while on or over tiles. Steven Wolf
Q: i need to know if there are any ways to remove concrete that has already set, from tile
Hydrochloic acid to about a 4 parts water 1 part acid may do it. Test it on a piece or not seen tile first. Paint on with a brush first, leave for about 10 mins then wire brush of. Other name is spirits of salts. Commonly used as a flux for soldering galvanised iron. USE FACE MASK VISOR TYPE AND COMMERCIAL GRADE RUBBER GLOVES. Wear an old pair of overalls or old clothes. If the acid gets on them they are history. Thorougly hose off with cold water when finished
Q: I need to know if flexbond is the best stuff to use for this type of job for a do it yourselfer. I have never worked with this stuff. I have only used regular thin set mortar in the past. Is it hard to work with?? And to lay the tiles this large do I have to butter the mortar on or can I just trowel it onto the plywood floor? Thanks, Fran
Tile and use almost as a regular thin set. Flexbond like any stronger thin set will tend to set up a bit faster than standard thin set . This because of the added latex in the thin set. Mix a bit less than normal. Mix and let set for 5/10 minutes and mix again, being very important when using extra modified thin set. Although this is a stronger thin set and will bond to ply wood. But the minimum substrate thickness must be met to be able tile tile over. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL
