Q: my husband put in tile in the motel i work at and it is ceramic tile and some of the rooms are popping up up can you tell me why? by the way could it be the climate i live in florida!
Could be the humidity. What did he use to stick them down? Did he use a mastic that comes already mixed in a tub? If so, there will probably always be problems in a humid or wet areas. Thinset is best for tile.
Q: I want to remove all the white tiles in my kitchen as some are broken, others don‘t match up and basicially who ever tiled it initially may have been intoxicated, some have come off easy, but others are stuck on tight, tried using a chisel hammer to smash them, but they would splinter and smash like glass, does anyone know a easier less messier way i can do this?
If you have a broken tile you obviously don’t need to worry about saving it. You may be able to pry it off the wall by sliding the putty knife under the tile at a very low angle (almost parallel to the surrounding tiles), then moving the knife around to break the tile away from the glue or mastic holding it on. Depending on how loose the tile is you may be able to remove it by simply sliding your putty knife under the tile and prying up gently. If the tile won't come off you'll need to get rid of the surrounding grout
Q: I have slate tile in now, but with sand underneath it. Is it possible for me to grout it into the cage? Is there a guide for this? Thanks.
A slate tile sounds great, I never thought of that. But grout is a terrible idea! It's chemical. Animals, esp. small ones with heat mats lamps, cannot be around chemicals like that. You're not even supposed to clean their cages with a sponge because of minor chemicals-they're very sensitive. There is no guide because that's a jerry rigged solution that isn't good for animals. And anyways if you grouted the tile in, you wouldn't be able to clean the cage good enough.
Q: Ok.. what i mean is this. Let‘s say you have hard tile beside the toliet and water damaged occured. Once you press down on the tile you can actually feel the weakness in the tile.. Does this automatically determine bad subflooring or is it possible just bad tile, Can I just killz over the subflooring repaint and lay new tile?
Does the tile wobble? It could mean the adhesive under the tile has deteriorated because of water leaks. Can you get under the floor and look up?
Q: Tiles on the iron out of the traces of how to remove
Try to use a thinner wipe, not on the use of 400/500 fine sand belt water fight, if the tile surface can only be broken
Q: Do they make that large of a difference? I am tiling my entire house, but can‘t find 1200 sq. ft. of the same tile dye number. I thought i could use different numbers in the bedroom. Is it going to be that noticable?
Just buy a bunch of cases and mix them all up. See if theres an arrow on the back of the tile so you have them all pointed in the same direction.
Q: I've tiled the walls and floors in my bathroom and want to install a tile baseboard. what kind of adhesive would work. Thanks
Most ceramic tile base profiles are to be installed against the wall, and not over the wall tile. Some tile manufacturers do provide a profile known as an Applied After base board tile. These tiles will have a radiused top, not a flat one. They are best applied with thin-set cement; or by using whatever adhesive the manufacturer specs out for their installation. When in a pinch, clear adhesive silicone works great for bonding tile to a slippery surface. Use strips of blue painter's tape to hold the tiles in place, as the silicone takes about 18 - 24 hours to set up to the point you can grout the tiles.
Q: My house that we moved into has the original small tiled ugly green floor in the bathroom. I would love not having to rip it up and replace it before we sell it this spring. Is it possible to paint the tile. And if so how or where do I go to learn how to do this.Thanks.
There okorder / it recommends not using floor tile paint in places such as bathrooms where there is moisture. I guess you could paint the floor a week or two before putting it on the market - a case of buyer beware if it all scrapes off 6 months later - but the paint is quite expensive so I wouldn't personally go down this route myself - as it's not a nice thing to happen for the unsuspecting buyers. I'm guessing that currently the floor is more of an eyesore as you haven't integrated this into your current bathroom design? Personally, I would ditch the painting idea and buy a decent off-cut of lino and cover up the old floor tiles since you only have a small area to work with. Lino nowadays comes in many guises/patterns and since it's a small area you can check all local companies for offcuts of perhaps the more expensive pseudo 'wood' type lino etc... You may spend ?50 but it will brighten the room and transform it into a more modern look - and ultimately will help you get your asking price. (You could also tell the buyers that the original green tiles are still underneath and they could reveal them if they wanted to...just don't tell them how ugly they are...the secret is to get them excited about new possibilities in the future!!) LOL Fingers crossed that your house sells quickly in the Spring. xx
Q: can you tile an old brick fireplacegt;?would it look stupid?
To do that it is a bit more complicated than it sounds. You would need to make the brick surface smooth, no crevaces. It's expensive time consuming. Consider resurfacing the fireplace
Q: im going to tile the floor next weekend with 16x16 ceramic tile, and i could use some advice2 questions actually...1. when i lay my backerboard, and tape the staggered seams, do i keep that thinset over the tape very thin? im afraid of a hump in the floor when i go to lay tile.2. how much pressure do i apply when seting the tiles in the thinset? ive seen websites that show very little pressure..and some that show alot of pressure. does it need to float on the thinset or mash it down in the thinset. i just want this to turn out good...its my 1st time, and ive done alot of research, but the information varies from person to person. any added advice or tips on this project would be greatly appreciated.
The thinset is self leveling, so do not worry about the bump of the tape. The tiles need to be pressed down enough that the tile cement has a good coverage of the back of the tile. Try one, and see what coverage you get. Then do the same after wards. Sounds a bit difficult, but when you do it, then it will seem very straight forward. Good Luck
