- Q: I moved into new construction 2 yrs ago. Someone did a crappy job at laying floor tiles down and now some of them have come loose. Does the whole floor need to come up and redone?
- I had this happen this year. they had to come and remove them and relay. IT was $2.00 per tile
- Q: We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?
- They are both great methods. Depending on the tile you select, it will be more cost affecting to use tile. Say you pick a nice glass tile, it should be cheaper than your granite. Plus it will still keep family and friends talking about the amazing kitchen! Hope that helps you out!
- Q: Do you fill up the grout all the way to the top or only upto inner edge? We filled it up to the inner edge, but now the grout and the tile edges are starting to collect dirt very easily and it is very hard to clean. We are thinking of regrouting all the way to the top so that it will be easier to clean. Is that the correct way to grout these tiles?
- Most all tiles ( there are exceptions) are always grouted flush to avoid a couple of things. One is the problem your having now and the other is to protect the edging of the tile.depending on just how much more you have to fill in, you make have to dig some grout out to get a proper bond.. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
- Q: I have an on going problem in my kitchen. Same time tile floor was done in our home but kitchen is the problem. It was done 3-4 years ago by a contractor, however he never showed up his face to help us. He left some grout with us and said if ever the grout pops up then we can mix it in the water and fill with this mixture. The grout from the kitchen floor always comes out. Underneath, the kitchen is wood floor. The kitchen is on the second floor. Our family room is also on the second level but no problem to that floor Please help.
- It's nice if you have a Dremel tool to use,but if your like me you have already spent more than you wanted to on the new product and didn't anticipate on spending any more getting the old ones out. I would spend the little bit it would cast to get a grout removal tool. Looks like a handel for a single edged razor blade but instead has a very rough edge to it. Diamond or graphite I think. Or I would get a flooring chisel and use a mallet. I think you are wanting to save your old tiles or reuse them. You might not see a small flooring chisel but they do have small chisels in the same area. Get an inexpensive one if you go that way because after use it wouldn't be worth saving or sharpening. Just tap it ac cross using a mallet, or a hammer, or a high heeled shoe.(just kidding about the shoe) Good Luck
- Q: Watercolor strokes on how to remove tiles
- First, the first use of flat shovel shovel most of the paint, and then wipe with a rag can be removed, pay attention to not hurt the surface of the tile. ?????? Second, you can also make tiles cleaners ?????? 1. Prepare a bottle of 500 ml of mineral water, pour out half; ?????? Take a bottle of soap powder; ?????? Take two bottles of vinegar; ?????? 4. Take three bottles of alcohol; ?????? 5. Add half a bottle of flour; ?????? 6. Shake the mineral water bottle to make it even. ?????? With the time, only need a spray, a rub, easy to get.
- Q: I am looking at purchasing a home but on the disclosure form from the seller, it shows that there is asbetos tiles on the basement floor.I know asbetos is a problem but in this case how much would it cost to remove it? should this be a deal breaker?
- Asbestos floor tiles aren't a health hazard as long as you don't try to remove them. The best way to prevent any possibility of a problem is to cover them with another floor covering. Follow Up: Asbestos based floor tiles were manufactured as late as the 1970's, and existing supplies were allowed to be installed into the early 1980's. Lead paint wasn't an issue then, and asbestos pipe insulation wasn't either. It would depend on the age of the house, but if disclosure noted the tiles and nothing else, it is unlikely there is a problem. Real Estate agents are under considerable liability if they fail to disclose such things. I know because I used to do C of O repairs for a Real Estate agency.
- Q: for diferent size tiles are there standard grout joint sizes
- This Site Might Help You. RE: what size grout joints for ceramic tile? for diferent size tiles are there standard grout joint sizes
- Q: Hello. To clean a fridge water was poured on the lower section . The water spilled out onto the floor where white tiles are. I left for a minute and came back and saw that the white tiles had grey blotches or spots. What happened, and how can I cure this?
- Tile won t stain under normal circumstances so I suspect the glaze is a bit worn off rt in front of the fridge.. That can be a wet spot that will dry eventually or stain the tile body in which you have no choice but to r and r the tile(s).. GL
- Q: I am thinking about tiling 2 bathrooms in a rental property and planning to use 12x12 tiles costing $1 each. I want to use the same tiles for bathtub surrounds as well as floor. I am looking for some advice about the size of tiles that may be appropriate. Thanks
- As answer 1 states and you already have priced, 12x12 is fine. Even in a small room the larger tile creates an illusion of larger space. The issue for the floor will be cutting, also as answer 1 states, but divisible is not as much the issue as how you square the room and where you set the center, allowing the most number of full pieces visible as possible. That's not only for aesthetics, but determining cuts and where the cut pieces will be least visible. If you have cove base molding you can assume 1/4 inch from the molding as the final grout line and throughout 1/4 inch is usual. What that does however, in your measuring is to add/subtract 1 inch for every 4 pieces of 12 x 12 tile. IE: If you think to tile in a 4 ft. wide area you will have to cut the tile at least on one side of that, allowing for the grout lines. Addressing wall tile size. I tiled my shower walls in a 16x 16 terra cotta but I don't advise it. The usual would be 4x4 or 6x6, in that size range. It's not impossible to use large tile but is more a challenge. You should use a rapid set mortar/mastic, still use spacers, even at 1/8 inch and set the lower course first, allow to dry/set 24 hours, then build your way up the wall. In my case with the size and weight I had to brace each tile to hold it in place. Given that these are rentals, I'd make the job as easy as possible, probably with smaller wall tiles, even mesh backed. In any case a poly blend mortar/quick set and the same in a sanded grout DOC
- Q: I laid some ceramic tile about 6 years ago in a family room. There are some tile that sound hallow, Like they did not set in the adhesive securely. Nothing else is wrong with the tile, but it does sound hallow when you walk on it. I laid the tile on a concrete slab. How would you go about fixing this? I thought of drilling a small hole in the center of the tile and spraying some liquid insulation (that you put around windows) and grouting the hole closed with some grout the same color as the tile.
- Don't do the insulation thing, it will crack the tile. It is not unusual for that to happen. To fix it take a chisel and dig out the grout around the edges. Then very gently with the bevel on the chisel toward the floor try to get it under the edge of the tile and work around the edges to pry the tile up. The chances that you will break the tile are about 85%, or 95 % you will damage the surrounding tiles so leave the thing alone until or if it breaks on it's own.
