- Q: Help me, please! I have an old air conditioning system...made in 1985, and the condenser fan went out. Long story short, I bought a new fan and I don't know how to hook it up. The old fan had 4 wires coming out of it: purple, black, green, and brown. The green is the ground and the brown and the purple went to the capacitor, black to power. Then there were two smaller black wires attached to the capacitor and they lead out to other components. My new fan has a green wire, a white wire, a black wire, a brown wire and a brown and white striped wire. My problem is this: I don't know where to attach the white wire or what to do with the two smaller black wires that were attached to the old capacitor. I was told by the gentleman who sold me the fan that I splice the white wire to purple wire - then do I hook that to the capacitor? What do I do with the two smaller black wires that lead out to other components??? (Cap them off???) I am confused and need some advice!
- You should send it to a qualified service agent. Air conditioners use the coolant as a lubricant for moving parts. Replacing a fan may look easy buy I believe there is a degree of calibration to consider. Especially with an AC unit from 1985.

- I didn't read the question so I was carefully working out the force. The wire is perpendicular to the first wire, so using the right hand rule you discover that the field it creates is PARALLEL to the first wire at this left end. The magnetic force is caused by the component which is PERPENDICULAR to the wire which is in fact zero. So there is no magnetic force at this point. As you move along the wire you get a diminishing amount of magnetism caused by the wire which is going out of the page but that field has a component which is DOWN the page. Therefore that part of the wire experiences a force which is into the page. ( take your right hand, put the thumb along the wire pointing to the right, the fingers point down the page, the palm points into the page which is then the direction of the force) I would be surprised if you were required to work out the magnitude of the force in this context. You can't use F= ILB because both the magnitude and the direction of the field varies at different points along the wire. If the perpendicular wire had been directly below the middle of the other wire there would have been no net force. If you were of a level where working out the force was appropriate you would need to set up the formula for B at various points along the wire, taking the vertical component only and integrate this over the range from 0 to 5 cm. Not a trivial mathematical task.

If yes you can assume it is a switch and solder it inline with the lead the other end (after the switch would be connected to the lead end of the 1/4 if you have a pigtail 1/4 then this would be the insulated wire, the ground would simply connect to the uninsulated wire if you are actually using a do it yourself 1/4 plug then the same rules apply only you are soldering to the terminal inside the plug sleeve rather then to bare wires (I always prefer this its cleaner). Please Note: The PTT switch will cause a loud pop when it is engaged and released on a Hi Gain guitar amp and sometimes this can damage the speakers as well as delicate internal components so do this of coarse at your own risk.
