- I have used sand with several different reptiles and haven't had any problems. If the gecko starts eating it, you'll want to use something else. Keep a ceramic tile from lowes or home depot under the food and water dish. Then if the food falls out it won't get covered in sand before your gecko eats it. It will also help keep sand from getting into the water dish and being ingested there. Cage carpet has also been known to snag and wrap around toes cutting off the circulation and eventually painfully amputating the toes of reptiles. Every substrate has it's drawbacks. It's my personal opinion that we should try to recreate a natural environment for our pets to reduce the stress put on them by keeping them as pets. Look at the substrate they would be on in their natural environment and use that.
